Clubs: Independent Women

One association welcomes women of all ages, nationalities and interests; large-scale and legendary events are fashioned that are both fulfilling and fund-raising.

With a 38-year-long history to its name, the American Women’s Association (AWA) of Bahrain has certainly made its mark and is a society that most residents of the Kingdom are familiar with. Bursting with 200 confident and aspirant female members, the largest women’s society in Bahrain has obtained numerous triumphs.

“We are able to combine community service activities, which are in place to support 35 different charities, with social events. We not only give to charities but also to individuals as the need arises,” explains club president Tosin Arowojolu.

Just a few achievements include building a garden for the disabled to enjoy, publishing a cookbook and establishing 11 activity groups for members to advance their talents.

And this growth and drive isn’t about to dwindle off anytime soon if Tosin has anything to do with it.

“Since I became president last June, I have aimed to unite women in Bahrain in friendship and cooperation and to promote understanding amongst women of different nationalities. Also I strive to enhance the cultural and social communication among our members and their families,” she says of her goal.

This month alone the AWA has got a vast number of high-profile events planned. The line-up kicks off on May 10 with the club’s first-ever Spring Ball; “The black tie AWA ball is an event not to be missed. A scrumptious three-course French dinner will be served accompanied by music from around the world,” Tosin explains. Tickets for the event cost BD25 for members and BD30 for non-members.

Next up will be the annual International Parade, celebrating American Mother’s Day on May 14. “This year we are using the theme ‘It’s a small world’ to portray the diverse cultures and nationalities involved in the organisation. Children will be encouraged to dress up to represent different countries, plus there will be a fashion show,” outlines Tosin.

May 26 hosts the Spring Bazaar, which is a part of the US embassy’s ‘America Week’ and will boast fashion designs, crafts, artworks, photographs and plenty more. “We are closely linked with the US Embassy and collaborate on some events, plus the US Ambassador’s wife is a board member and honorary president.”

Finally, June 3 will launch the AWA’s annual art exhibition, titled ‘Visions 2012’. “This year is the first time that the AWA photography group has participated. Over 20 ladies are taking part and a percentage from the sales will be donated to charity,” Tosin says.

The ladies are planning many additional events for the year. “Expect to see the return of old favourites such as the fall craft fair plus much more to come,” tempts Tosin. “We advertise all of our events through our incredibly usable website and are working on establishing a Facebook page for members to use.”
