Bahrain This Month - August 2024

Bahrainthismonth.com August 2024 67 “These programmes are designed to meet the needs of our industry partners who are seeking skilled technicians,” says Mr. Ó Catháin. “Not everyone needs to go to university; there is a demand for well-trained technical staff in various sectors.” The revamped apprenticeship programmes, which take inspiration from successful models in Europe and Singapore, include training in essential trades such as plumbing, electrical work, air conditioning and welding. The three-year curricula are structured to blend practical on-the-job training with theoretical instruction at Bahrain Polytechnic, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. Mr. Ó Catháin emphasises the importance of hands-on experience, stating that 70 percent of the programme is practical, allowing apprentices to apply their learning in real-world settings and ensuring they are job-ready upon completion. The impact on youth employment is already visible. “We have seen significant interest from companies and have partnered with around 80 businesses for the initial phases,” Mr. Ó Catháin notes. “These partnerships not only provide apprentices with employment but also ensure that industries have a steady pipeline of skilled workers.” The programme also aims to foster entrepreneurial skills among young Bahrainis, with the potential for apprentices to start their own businesses, thus creating jobs and contributing to the economy.“We want our apprentices to see themselves not just as employees but as future employers,” he states. Furthermore, the apprenticeship programmes are inclusive, allowing expatriates to enrol, albeit without the same financial support available to Bahraini nationals. “These programmes are a win-win for our students and our industry partners, providing valuable skills that are essential for Bahrain’s economic growth,” Mr. Ó Catháin concludes.
