www.bahrainthismonth.com 34 December 2022 The Kingdom of Bahrain celebrates its 51 st National Day this year and has bright future in store for Team Bahrain. Ahmed Alsayed shares his thoughts on some of the kingdom’s achievements through the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Bahrain is now set on a path towards further social and economic development, and prosperity, as the Kingdom celebrates its 51st National Day on December 16, 2022. This follows the historic success of the recent national elections with an unprecedented turnout for both the Council of Representatives and municipal elections, as well as, the appointment of the new Shura Council, accompanied by the formation of a dynamic and progressive government led by the visionary leadership of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain. What boosts this positive outlook is the encouraging news that most economic sectors experienced positive growth, owing to the post-COVID-19 economic recovery. Bahrain›s real GDP increased by 6.9 percent year on year in the second quarter of 2022, as almost all non-oil sectors grew. Add to that, Bahrain recently announced the discovery of two new natural gas reservoirs, in addition to the drilling for the first production wells in Bahrain’s offshore shale oil discovery expected to start soon. This couldn’t have come at a better time as oil prices are stable and still priced in the Kingdom’s favour. Moreover, Bahrain boasts a workforce that is young, educated, hardworking, and dynamic, one that excels in various industries and sectors. From management to media, Fintech to fisheries, and tourism to trade, Bahrainis have always proven to be up to any challenge when given an opportunity to shine. The Economic Vision 2030, which is strongly advocated by HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has already shown a positive impact HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, recently met with the Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture Affairs, HE Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, at Gudaibiya Palace. During the meeting, HRH was briefed by HE on the latest developments in the Kingdom’s afforestation plan. HE reviewed illustrative maps of this year’s accomplishments, following HRH’s directives of quadrupling mangrove coverage and doubling tree coverage across the Kingdom. The presentation outlined the Kingdom’s success in achieving 100 percent of its annual afforestation goal, by planting 110,000 seedlings of mangrove trees, and approximately 140,000 trees across several governorates. www.bahrainthismonth.com December 2022 35 with the continued growth of the economy, creating jobs, and attracting inward investment from reputable global brands such as Kraft, and Amazon Web Services, to name a few, who have set up foot in Bahrain. Such successes further enhance Bahrain’s image globally as it retains its title as the regional financial and business hub. These achievements did not occur by chance, but rather is a cultivation of years of hard work and dedication of the strong Team Bahrain led by HRH Prince Salman who is diligent in promoting Bahrain as a destination for business and investment, and creating the economic infrastructure and climate that supports that vision. HRH Prince Salman has been incubating new businesses and Bahraini talent to help build the kingdom on its journey to sustainable development and prosperity. Benjamin Franklin once said: “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. HRH Prince Salman championed education in Bahrain from a young age, and personally supported Bahraini students to reach the highest echelons of academia. Nowhere is this more evident than in HRH the Crown Prince’s International Scholarship Programme (CPISP), established in 1999. The programme promotes outstanding educated young Bahrainis and provides them with a generous support mechanism to achieve their aspirations. HRH Prince Salman recognises that Bahrain’s most valuable asset is its people, and has spared no expense to maximise their potential. Over two decades on, The CPISP has provided (and continues to provide) Bahrain with world-class managers, lawyers, engineers, entrepreneurs, bankers, and more. In fact, many of its graduates today are in positions of national responsibility such as a minister, government officials, and industry leaders, proving that His Royal Highness knew all along that his faith and confidence in his people and vision for highly educated Bahrainis will undoubtedly come to fruition. That is precisely why Team Bahrain led by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, will lead Bahrain to a bright and prosperous future. Happy National Day Bahrain! The spectacular Exhibition World Bahrain, which covers 95,000 sqm. and has ten halls, was inaugurated by HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The sixth edition of the Bahrain International Airshow was launched by HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister at the Sakhir airbase. The event took place over three days and saw the attendance of 186 companies, more than 200 civilian and military delegations, and 100 different aircraft on static and flying display. His Majesty King Hamad received HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister for the constitutional oath-taking HRH the Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Economic Development Board (EDB), received the Sultan of the Sultanate of Oman, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said, at the EDB headquarters. www.bahrainthismonth.com 38 December 2022 Have a great Bahraini Breakfast Few words can describe how comforting it is to tuck into a great Bahraini breakfast platter. Get an early start to make sure you get a table at one of the fantastic local restaurants spread across the island. Some of our favourites are the traditional Haji Café located at the Manama Souq, Freej bin Rashdan in Muharraq, Foods at Home in Budaiya and Naseef on the stunning Al Sa’ada Waterfront. Warm up with some Chai Karak! If you’re new to the Kingdom, you might be wondering what Chai Karak is. It literally translates to strong tea and can be enjoyed dine-in at cafes or at tea shops which will bring cups of it to your car. This fragrant milk tea is an essential during Bahraini winter and enjoyed by all. Take a selfie at the Camel Farm Located in Janabiyah, the Camel Farm has been a favourite among tourists and residents alike for several years. The farm, which is open from sunrise to sunset, is home to hundred of camels. These animals are in fact quite friendly so you can gently pet them and feed them too. That being said, remember to ask the caretakers for their feed as opposed to bringing your own as they do have specific feed. Entry to the farm is free for all. GET IN THE SPIRIT! December, and particularly National Day, is the time to celebrate the charming island that we call ‘home’. Here are some ways you can delve into the rich culture of Bahrain and celebrate it in a fitting way this year with your family and friends. Explore the Bahrain Fort Did you know that the Bahrain Fort is also a UNESCO Heritage site. This beautiful fort is located on the coast in Karbabad (Seef area) and offers beautiful views of the city, sea and surrounding farm areas too. If you’re lucky you may even catch the ‘Bahrain Cowboys’ on a leisurely ride in the surrounding area. It truly is a vibe. national day
www.bahrainthismonth.com December 2022 39 Tuck into some Delicious Grills For dinner, be sure to visit one of the many local grill shops around the island and enjoy a delicious plate of lumee tikka, kebab or reyash (lamb chops). This with a side of hummus or mutabal and hot khubbis is just perfection. What most people don’t realise is that these grills are not only supremely delicious, but incredibly cheap too! You’ll likely have a feast for just a couple of dinars! Marvel at the Lights Every National Day the city comes alive with stunning lights in and around the capital. There are two ways you can enjoy the experience and both are fun in their own way. You can either deck your car out in Bahraini flags and drive down the highway in Manama or head to Riffa for a drive past the iconic clock roundabout. Just remember you will be in a spot of traffic for this one. Alternatively, you can enjoy the lights along the corniche and by the Avenues. Just arrive early, park your car and enjoy a leisurely stroll with your loved ones. Oh, and don’t forget to take some pictures for the ‘gram! Paddle at Bahrain Bay Here’s a fantastic early afternoon activity. Enjoy some of the best views of the Manama skyline from a very different perspective at Bahrain Bay. Stroll along the bay and get a kayak or go stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) along the bay for a truly sensational and serene experience. If paddling isn’t quite your thing, you can also take a ferry boat ride all the way around the bay or even grab pizza and ride around the bay on a Dough boat. Whatever you choose to do here, we’re positive it’ll be a great experience. Watch the fireworks There are some things that you absolutely cannot miss for a National Day celebration, and fireworks across the island surely top the list. These can now be watched from different locations across the island, which are usually announced closer to the date. What we can confirm for now is that you can watch the fireworks at the Bahrain International Circuit on December 16 at 7pm. Be sure to watch our social media for updates. We cannot stress this enough though: set off early to ensure a parking spot and avoid traffic. Pic credit: Febin G John @the_gobro Pic credit: Febin G John @the_gobro national day
interview www.bahrainthismonth.com 40 December 2022 HERE IN COMMAND The United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet has been headquartered in the Kingdom of Bahrain for several decades. The fleet’s commander, VADM Brad Cooper, is also at the helm of two large coalitions: the Combined Maritime Force (CMF) and International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC). In this conversation with Bahrain This Month, he gives us some insight into the fleet’s priorities, their role in intercepting drugs and weapons in the region, and gives us a peek into his life too. Can you give us an overview of Fifth Fleet’s mission? What have been your priorities as commander here? Just to give you a little context on why we’re focused on this region, it’s a big maritime region covering 8,000 kms. from the Suez Canal all the way around the Arabian Peninsula into the North Arabia Gulf. It’s a vast amount of water, and through these waters flow 20 percent of the world’s oil. I think we would all agree that this region, literally and figuratively fuels the world. So, ensuring maritime stability is important; and that’s our responsibility. We focus on maritime security through deterrence and maintaining the ability to respond should something happen. We believe the best way to meet that is by strengthening our partnerships and accelerating innovation, which are really at the heart and soul of everything that we’re doing here. We’re fortunate to have two very large coalitions here that I command: the Combined Maritime Force (CMF), a 34 member-nation maritime force which is the largest in the world, and the International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC) which is an 11-nation maritime force. Can you tell us about ‘Digital Horizon’ which was recently launched here in Bahrain? Digital Horizon is what I would call the next step in a series of steps that we’ve taken to accelerate innovation. One of the important aspects of our efforts to bring unmanned and artificial intelligence together has been the speed at which we’ve been able to do it. We’ve been moving very quickly using a model that I characterise as ‘factory to fleet’ - the latest and greatest that the world has to offer; let’s bring it to the region and operate it and see how it works. It’s a tough region to operate in from a climate perspective and long distances. So, if it works here, it can probably work anywhere else. About six months ago, we worked with a number of organisations in the Department of Defense, and asked for the latest and greatest around the world in unmanned systems and artificial intelligence over time. That got necked down and today we’re working with 17 industry partners who have 15 platforms here, 10 of which are here for this event for the first time. As I look to the future, we’ll take lessons from this as well as operational lessons and apply them in a meaningful way.
