new year Bahrainthismonth.com 14 January 2024 NEW YEAR, NEW YOU UNVEILING YOUR BRIGHTER 2024 As the confetti settles, a familiar feeling stirs within us. The fresh promise of a New Year, blank pages in a calendar waiting to be filled with adventures, ambitions and perhaps, a sprinkle of reinvention. We whisper ‘New Year, New Me,’ a mantra brimming with potential but often laden with pressure. But what if this year, we approached ‘New Year, New You’ differently? Instead of drastic overhauls and unrealistic expectations, let us focus on sustainable choices, self-compassion and attainable goals. Let us cultivate a kinder, brighter 2024, where growth feels organic and every day carries the spark of joy. We must be mindful and vigilant as the New Year begins and not take a day for granted. Before diving into resolutions, ask yourself – what truly matters to you? Do you crave creative expression? Deeper connections? A healthier lifestyle? Identifying your core desires gives your goals direction and a sense of purpose. Lofty ambitions are inspiring, but overwhelming. Instead, focus on micro-changes you can easily incorporate into your daily routine. Take a 15-minute walk instead of scrolling mindlessly, swap sugary snacks for a piece of fruit or prioritise sleep. These small victories snowball into significant progress over time. Practice gratitude by acknowledging and appreciating the blessings in your life. Counting your blessings fosters a positive mindset and cultivates a sense of contentment and fulfilment. Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, big or small. Did you finally finish that book? Take yourself to a movie. Conquered a challenging workout? Treat yourself to a relaxing bath. These self-celebrations keep you motivated and reinforce positive habits. It is always important to make sure we rethink the choices we make and be conscious with our decision-making and have sustainable choices this year. Always be mindful of your purchases. Do you truly need that new gadget, or can you repair your existing one? Can you support local businesses and farmers’ markets, reducing your carbon footprint? Conscious consumption extends beyond material goods – evaluate your energy usage, minimise food waste and embrace reusable alternatives. We are often caught up with the technologybased world and forget the importance of being around nature and fresh air. Immerse yourself in the natural world. Take a hike, garden in your balcony or simply observe the changing seasons. Nature has a restorative power, reducing stress and fostering a sense of connection to something larger than ourselves. Taking care of oneself is vital for sustainable well-being. Focus on adopting habits that promote physical, mental and emotional health. This can include regular exercise, a balanced diet, quality sleep and engaging in hobbies that bring joy and relaxation. With the world moving at such a fast pace, we often miss out the little things in life and forget to appreciate them as much as they should be. This year, resist the fast-paced, always-on mentality. Dedicate time for hobbies,
new year Bahrainthismonth.com unplug from technology and savour simple pleasures like a home-cooked meal or a meaningful conversation. Slow living allows you to appreciate the present moment and reduce your environmental impact. We often berate ourselves for perceived shortcomings. Instead, practice selfcompassion. Replace harsh criticism with encouraging affirmations. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend. You are not a productivity machine, nor are you flawless. Accept that hiccups and setbacks are inevitable. Forgive yourself for occasional missteps and learn from them without dwelling on the past. Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body and soul. Take a long bath, listen to calming music or indulge in a creative pursuit. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for your well-being and fuels your capacity to thrive. When we set goals for ourselves every year, we often do not take in all the possibilities which in-turn leads to a lack of focus on the main agenda. You must make sure to set goals that are SMART: ‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.’ Instead of ‘get healthy,’ aim for ‘walk 30 minutes, three times a week for the next month.’ This clarifies your goal and increases your chances of success. Never forget the journey is just as important as the destination. It is in the journey that we learn more about ourselves and build character, be sure to enjoy the journey and celebrate the small wins and acknowledge your progress along the way. Fixating on perfection only leads to discouragement. Life throws curveballs and your journey may be hindered at times and you will be forced to move off track. In moments like these it is crucial to have a moment to reflect and reset, stay adaptable and adjust your goals when needed. Do not let minor setbacks derail your progress. Instead, see them as opportunities to learn and refine your approach. Remember, your ‘New You’ is not a transformation that happens overnight. It is an ongoing journey of growth, discovery and self-acceptance. Embrace the imperfections, celebrate the milestones and prioritise your well-being. In this kinder, more sustainable approach, you will find that the ‘New Year, New You’ isn’t a pressure-filled resolution, but a joyful unfolding of your authentic self. So, as you turn the page on 2024, do not aim for a drastic overhaul. Instead, plant the seeds of intention and nurture them with selfcompassion, day by beautiful day. January 2024 15
interview Bahrainthismonth.com 16 January 2024 Bahrain and Pakistan enjoy a long-standing diplomatic partnership, with the South Asian nation being one of the first to establish relations in the Kingdom in 1971. Kristian Harrison spoke to the Ambassador of Pakistan to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Saqib Rauf, about his diplomatic career and his plans to bolster ties between the two nations. Your Excellency, thank you for sitting down with us! Firstly, can you give us an overview of your career journey to date? I joined the diplomatic service of Pakistan after completing my Master’s in Economics from the University of Sindh. Along the way, I did another Master’s in Diplomatic Studies and Public Administration from the Australian National University. In my foreign assignments, I’ve served in New York, Tehran and Brussels. I spent one year in Italy as well for my language learning module. What are your initial impressions of Bahrain now that you’ve had a little time to settle in? I’ve been in Bahrain for two months now. I must say it is one of the most hospitable countries that I’ve seen. The people are very warm, polite and highly educated. Bahrain has a welldeveloped physical and industrial infrastructure and is taking serious steps to stay ahead of the curve by focusing on emerging fields of artificial intelligence and cyber security. This reflects the visionary leadership of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Bahrain and Pakistan have a long and strong diplomatic relationship. How proud do you feel to be one of the custodians of this relationship and what are your immediate plans to bolster ties through 2024? Pakistan was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Bahrain. The relations between our people, however, go centuries back. We share a number of similarities in our language and culture. For me, it is a great honour to act as a bridge between our two countries. This is a serious responsibility, but the ambassadors have a very elaborate network of support from their colleagues in the diplomatic circle. So with the cooperation of my team at the embassy, our colleagues in Bahrain’s Embassy and Consulate General in Pakistan and our Ministries of Foreign Affairs, we strive to perform this responsibility. In 2024, according to the vision of our leadership, we plan to take stock of what we have achieved so far and how we can build further on our existing ties. Once this plan of action is discussed and agreed at the start of the year, we hope to work towards implementing this plan. This was something which was suggested by diplomat par excellence, Foreign Minister HE Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani. What are the longer-term goals you wish to achieve by the end of your tenure in Bahrain? I believe in building things gradually. At the moment, we have identified some concrete proposals, which are under discussion. These cover cooperation in various fields ranging from economic and trade cooperation, law and order and issues related to Pakistani labour. I am sure these discussions will lead to some fruitful outcomes and pave the way for further cooperation. What is the current state of relations between Bahrain and Pakistan? What are some of the key areas of cooperation between the two countries? Our two countries have close political, commercial and defence relations. There is regular interaction between our respective leaderships. We have a large community in Bahrain, which is generously hosted PROPELLING DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS
interview Bahrainthismonth.com January 2024 17 by our brothers and sisters in Bahrain. This community plays the role of a bridge between our peoples. What are some of the challenges facing the Bahrain-Pakistan relationship, and how do you plan to address them? I don’t see any challenges as such. However, there are always opportunities to build on an already-solid relationship. The two countries, for example, can work together in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics and cyber security. Similarly, in traditional areas of economic cooperation as well, we always have room to broaden bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit. What are the trade figures between Bahrain and Pakistan? What are the main imports and exports? Bilateral trade is in the vicinity of around USD1 billion. From our side, we mainly export agricultural and food items such as meat, fish and vegetables to Bahrain. From Bahrain, we are primarily importing oil and petrochemical products. However, there is a surge in trade in services as well. Overall, the balance of trade has remained in favour of Bahrain by a considerable margin. What can the Pakistan government do to support Pakistani businesses and entrepreneurs who are interested in expanding into the Bahraini market? Interestingly, we are already working on it. One of the key challenges for Pakistani exporters to introduce and distribute their products in Bahrain has been the absence of any major Pakistani supermarket in Bahrain. Similarly, Bahrain offers a very attractive investment regime. We are approaching Pakistani businesses to inform them of these opportunities and intend to get them in touch with the relevant Bahraini agencies here. Approximately how many Pakistanis reside in Bahrain and in what fields do they work? By our estimate, there are approximately 80,000 Pakistanis in Bahrain. They are working as professionals including doctors, engineers, bankers, chartered accountants, businessmen and labour workers. What are your ideas to boost tourism between the two countries and are there any cultural exchanges planned? Gulf Air has regular flights operating to and from Pakistan. Similarly, there are some flights of Pakistan International Airlines. In the past, we have been in touch with these airlines to see how this easy travel between the two countries can be leveraged more for tourism. As for cultural activities, you’ll see the Pakistani diaspora in Bahrain actively celebrating Bahrain’s National Day. These events are a venue of projecting and introducing our younger generations with culture of both countries. Some performers were recently invited by Pakistani doctors for a music event and similarly, Bahrainis in Pakistan have been invited to their events by the respective embassy. What is your message for the Pakistani community in Bahrain? Our community is fully aware of the generous hospitality which is extended to them by our Bahraini brothers and sisters. They as a community, and we as their embassy here, are grateful for the opportunity that Bahrain provides to these people to work productively to the benefit of both countries. My message to them, I am sure though that they are already doing it, is to work with dedication for the progress and prosperity of Bahrain. Outside of your ambassadorial duties, what is your main hobby? I try to work out, though it is not very regular! Reading, however, is a life-long hobby and I enjoy a mixture of both fiction and non-fiction. Anything more to add? I’d like to thank Bahrain This Month for this opportunity to discuss the beautiful relationship between our countries, and I also extend our felicitations to our brothers and sisters in Bahrain on their recent 52nd National Day and wish them a prosperous New Year for 2024. interview Bahrainthismonth.com 18 January 2024 Your Excellency, welcome to Bahrain! Could you give our readers some insight into your diplomatic career? Firstly, I would like to say it is a great pleasure to meet with your renowned magazine, which has been part of my readings since my arrival in Bahrain. In short, my career abroad has been mostly oriented towards the Arab world, with different postings in Libya, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Before coming to Manama, I had the chance to be a diplomatic advisor to the Arab World Institute in Paris, which is a unique foundation, dedicated to a better knowledge of the Arab world, and to deepen the links between France and the Arab countries. This institution presented some years ago a beautiful and successful exhibition on the history of Bahrain and its treasures. What are your first impressions of Bahrain, having had a little time to settle into your new role? I was lucky enough to have visited Bahrain some years ago and my impressions are today as they were at that time. Bahrain is a great and interesting country, marked by an impressive age-old civilisation. Its heritage is of big interest and France is glad to have an archaeological mission working here, in cooperation with the Bahrain Authority Developing Multi-Faceted Bilateral Relations Bahrain and France enjoy a longstanding diplomatic partnership stretching back more than 50 years. Recently, His Excellency Eric Giraud-Telme became the new French Ambassador to the Kingdom. Bahrain This Month sat down with him to discuss his diplomatic career, his first months in post and his plans to bolster ties between the two nations.
interview Bahrainthismonth.com January 2024 19 for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) since 1977. The people of Bahrain, who are so welcoming, have shown their attachment to their history and they cherish and preserve their precious heritage. Bahrain is a country of openness, tolerance and coexistence, which you can feel every day. How would you describe the current state of relations between France and Bahrain? We are now celebrating more than a halfcentury since the opening of the French embassy in Bahrain. The relationship between France and Bahrain is not only excellent, at the highest level, but also rooted in history: even before the establishment of an embassy, the Alliance Française was already active here. Important French companies were also already settled in this country. We have since then, developed a very trustful and multifaceted relationship in security, economy, education, health, culture, justice and more. What are the key priorities for France when it comes to diplomatic relations with Bahrain? Firstly, I believe Bahrain has a young and promising generation, which is very well educated. I would love our diplomatic relations to focus on the youth to develop a better understanding of the opportunities, especially in training, for our respective countries. Take the economy; the position of France as the first destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Europe is not known enough. Reversely, we have started to explain opportunities that Bahrain has to offer to our SMEs. Another priority for me is culture and French language: I can feel the appeal of the French language among the Bahraini people. I know it can be challenging, and there is room for progress even more to provide a quality French learning education. It is a real asset to have access to the French speaking world and markets from West Africa to Canada and Asia. The iconic ‘French international lycée MLF’ in Bahrain, welcomes many students of Bahraini and other nationalities and is a key element in that regard. I call on families in Bahrain to consider choosing that school of excellence for the education of their children. Can you discuss any ongoing or upcoming bilateral initiatives or projects between France and Bahrain? We have two major initiatives, one regarding judicial cooperation and the other one in favour of youth and sustainable development. France works closely with the Bahrain Judicial & Legal Studies Institute on judiciary cooperation. Our best experts in the French judiciary are involved and one major focus of this cooperation is alternative sentencing. This month, a dozen of Bahraini judges and lawyers are going to travel to Paris and be in touch with all the relevant institutions in France. Another example is the Green Youth Hackathon, a project deployed for the first-time last year. It aims at supporting the development of sustainable entrepreneurial projects in Bahrain. Participants designed an entrepreneurial project focused on sustainable development goals, namely responsible consumption and production, and the fight against climate change. This project will be repeated in 2024, focusing on other SDGs this year. What are the current trade figures between France and Bahrain? The level of exchange between our two countries is good and has picked up quite significantly after the period since Covid-19. We are happy to observe a trend increasing by more than 80 percent last year over the year before. Hopefully, we will be able to catch up the level of 2019, which was close to EUR700 million on a yearly basis. Furthermore, we have a very dynamic and active French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bahrain, that is leveraging on three main activities to enhance economic and trade cooperation between the two countries: providing business services to French companies willing to establish a business in Bahrain, promoting Bahrain as a trade destination for French businesses and entrepreneurs, and leading a community of French and Bahraini businessmen and women through different networking events and sectorial committees. Are there any current or planned cultural and educational exchanges between France and Bahrain? The French archaeological mission has played a leading role in understanding the various civilisations of the Gulf in antiquity, and the Dilmun culture, on the site of Qal’at Al-Bahrain, where it was active for 30 years. Headed by Julien Cuny, the mission will travel back to Bahrain to study the Hellenistic necropolis of Abu Saiba and its Tylos culture. Last year, the famous Musée du Louvre opened the exhibition ‘From Dilmun to Tylos’, bringing together an exceptional collection of over 70 pieces from the National Museum of Bahrain. France also supports the most cutting edge know-how, like in the fashion industry. A major fashion show will be held in early 2024, at which participants will be able to present their collections on the theme of ‘the revisited abaya’. The embassy will reward the best designers by offering them the opportunity to study in Paris at the ‘Institut Français de la Mode’ as part of a short programme. How does France view Bahrain’s role in regional security and stability in the Gulf? France and Bahrain have a strong security cooperation, aligned on sharing an important goal: preserving the freedom of navigation, especially in the Gulf, and regional security. Secondly, I would say that the geographical position of Bahrain in the Gulf makes it act as an important contributor to regional security and stability. What are the major challenges or obstacles to further strengthening the relationship between France and Bahrain? I would say that the main challenge is that I have so much ambition for this relationship and we have so much to do, in so many areas, that I believe I don’t have enough hours in my day to reach my goal! More seriously, I believe the challenge of this mission is to take into account different trends in a quickly changing environment, on many topics: climate change, digital life, etc. We need to be flexible in our policies and adapt our common responses. What are your main goals as Ambassador both in the short term and longer term? On the short term, with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, we have a major milestone in front of us, a celebration of sport and the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect, with a focus on openness, accessibility and inclusiveness. It will be the first one to welcome as many men and women athletes. I want to leverage it to strengthen sports cooperation between our countries. As a tool for education, health and social inclusion, the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 is a unique opportunity to bring more sport into the lives of all our citizens both in Bahrain and France. It is an opportunity for an entire country to awaken its inner champion, but it is also an event that works for everyone, of every generation, in every nation. We would like to help promote more common initiatives in Bahrain, particularly among young people, support initial and further training in the field of sport and get French and Bahraini athletes to work more together. On the long term I am committed to work in order to enhance the bilateral relationship in all fields, with the help and support of all the French actors in the country, the ‘team France’ as we call it, with my great team of the Embassy, and of course with our Bahraini friends. Is there anything you’d like to add? Yes, I would like to add that I am so grateful to the Bahraini authorities and the people of Bahrain for their nice and gentle welcome of my family and myself. I am looking forward to meeting more people and discovering more of your beautiful country. And finally, I would like to wish every single one of your readers a wonderful and prosperous New Year, full of joy and happiness for them and their families!

Bahrainthismonth.com 24 January 2024 Mr Nogueira, better known as Minotauro, is one of the most popular faces in the world of MMA, with legions of fans around the world. The native Brazilian, alongside his twin brother Rogerio, impressed during a storied career with a magnetic personality and a priority on showing respect. Now in his new career as an ambassador, Minotauro gets to travel the world doing what he loves; seeing all kinds of promotions and finding the next generation of UFC fighters. In the last three months of the year, he witnessed more than a thousand fights. Before he even got to Brave, Minotauro was glowing about his opinion of Bahrain. “First of all, I’d like to say I’m in love with this country,” he exclaimed. “It’s beautiful, the people are so receptive and it’s a modern place which loves its combat sports. I definitely came at the right time to see all the National Day lights and festivities! “When it came to Brave itself, I found it an incredible promotion. Ultimately, I’m here because we need new talents and to find the next generation of our sport. Obviously I have a focus on Brazil, but I find gems in other parts of the world too. To see what His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa has achieved since 2016 really shows what can be accomplished with investment and bringing the best coaches and trainers. It really impressed me. “I truly believe that if they keep going, they can host a full UFC event in Bahrain just like they do in the UAE.” There are few men in the world with as much knowledge of MMA as Minotauro, and he was keen to sing the praises of Brave as a high-level production event with a very high level of skill. In return, many of the fighters sought him out for priceless advice on how to take the next step in their career. “For me, I would always tell a young fighter to maintain the highest level of respect they can. Some fighters, they like pressure talk. Some like to promote themselves, but then they just lose control and it gets nasty. The principle of martial arts is respect. I trained in martial arts since I was four years old and the first thing I learned was to bow to the mat and my opponent. When you bow to someone, you thanks him for using his body to get better and obtain more knowledge. I love it when fighters go hard at once another, but once the fight is done, they give a hug.” Away from the ring, Mr Nogueira and his twin brother have created a social project, called Beyond Borders, aimed at ‘transforming lives and turning dreams into opportunities.’ The ultimate goal is to help children in Brazil learn physical education by developing technical and socioemotional skills. If successful, the brothers hope to spread it around the world. As for Minotauro, he hopes to return to the Kingdom in February. “We have plans to potentially open a gym here next year and I will bring coaches from the Brazilian MMA teams to learn what they do here.” Bahrain has become a global MMA hub in recent years with its hugely successful Brave Combat Federation. Recently, former UFC Heavyweight Champion and current global ambassador Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira visited the Kingdom to attend the marquee Brave CF 80 event, and Kristian Harrison caught up with him to find out more about his stay. interview Bahrainthismonth.com 26 January 2024 With a 25year career in investment management, strategic and financial planning, M&A, it is no surprise that Ahmed Janahi was appointed as Group Chief Executive Officer of Gulf Hotels Group (GHG) recently. Bahrain This Month sat down with him to discuss his vision for the company, the importance of leadership and the current state of the Kingdom’s hospitality industry. Ringing in the Future of Hospitality
interview Bahrainthismonth.com January 2024 27 Can you tell us about your career so far and how you plan to lead GHG into the future? My background is mostly in investment, so I spent most of my time and years of experience in the real estate and hospitality sector. I’ve been with the GHG board since 2016 and my view is that the company has huge potential to grow. We have a portfolio of hotels and branded residences in Bahrain, including the Gulf Hotel, Crowne Plaza, Novotel, Asdal Gulf Inn, Gulf Executive Residences, the Bahrain Airport Hotel, plus properties in Dubai and Zanzibar. What would you say is the most exciting part about being the group CEO? Being CEO of a renowned hospitality management company with over 50 years of industry experience and backed by strong shareholders, it really brings endless opportunities for the future I look forward to witnessing the thriving potential of this organisation, as we all aim to make a lasting and positive impact on our local community. With your extensive experience in investment management, how do you plan to leverage your expertise in order to drive growth and profitability for GHG? We’ll be overseeing our assets and actively managing them to improve their performance. This involves working with the management of each of these assets through regular monitoring and assessing the financial and the operational performance to identify opportunities for growth. So that’s the idea. We’ll also create value and synergy across our operations by streamlining processes and sharing resources and services. In your previous roles, you have been involved in mergers and acquisitions. Can you discuss any potential strategies for expansion or acquisitions that you have in mind for GHG? Our DNA is to grow organically and through acquisition. For example, we recently announced our expansion to Saudi Arabia and that will be our priority market that we will be looking to acquire and develop hotels across major cities including Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah in partnership with local investors and developers. The hospitality industry has faced significant challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. How do you plan to navigate these challenges and position GHG for future success in a postpandemic world? The hospitality industry has recovered and witnessed a steady growth post-pandemic across all KPIs. For example, if we look at STR data, the occupancy rate has gone up from 50.6 per cent to 52.6 per cent over the last 12 months. The other important aspects is that the government is also investing in hospitality and I would say tourism and the number of visitors is very promising. As per the BTEA, we had 5.9 million visitors arrive in Bahrain for the first six months of 2023. The target is 14.1 million of visitors by 2026. The recent agreement between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to promote the two counties as a common tourist destination is also expected to attract more visitors and create further demand for hotels. Development is a key aspect of staying competitive in the hospitality industry. What are your plans for expanding and improving GHG’s portfolio of properties and services? As mentioned, Saudi Arabia is the main target of expansion through either acquisition or development. We’re already in the process of discussion with several local investors and developers to develop hotels and branded residences in major cities of KSA. With regards to Bahrain, we have a plan for numerous developments focused around extending our food and beverage offerings outside the hotel. We will be developing multiple premium restaurants in Block 338 which we will be announcing shortly. The customer experience is vital in the hospitality industry. How do you plan to enhance and personalise the guest experience at your group? I completely agree with that, which is why it really is a priority for us and will continue to be so in order to deliver exceptional guest experience across our hotels and restaurants. We will strive to continue to improve the personalised services we offer and enhance the amenities and the facilities using innovative technology. How will you use technology to improve operational duties as well as customer experience? Technology innovation is one of our key initiatives for 2024. We have already started the process of digital transformation, which covers all aspects of an improved booking experience such as a mobile app for booking, in-room technology, a loyalty programme and more. What plans are being put in place when it comes to fostering a positive and collaborative work environment at GHG? I think collaboration is a fundamental value for us to really achieve our goal. It is my priority to work closely with each team member within our properties to improve the areas of learning and development. As management, we have an open transparent communication on our targets and expectations, and the most important area will be recognising the individual contribution to the group by providing proper rewards and incentive.
