Bahrainthismonth.com 18 Jul 2023 interview After more than four years in the top seat, Mr Al Samahiji has guided the K Hotel through its most difficult period with an expert hand. It was a labour of love for the man with the incredible 25-year career, who began in a junior position in the food and beverage department in 1998. The K Hotel is where he started his hospitality management career in earnest, and where he has remained for the past 10 years. He started out by spending two years as director of sales and marketing back in 2013. He was soon promoted to executive assistant manager after completing the General Managers Programme at Cornell University in 2015. In 2017 he was appointed as the general manager of one of the leading four-star hotels in the Kingdom, operated by the Gulf Hotels Group. Asked what drives him in the hospitality industry, Mr Al Samahiji explains: “Of course, I was attracted by the luxury and etiquette. But, more importantly, it allows you to meet anyone at any level. I am a sociable kind of guy and I enjoy building strong relationships with our guests and our associates.” His relationship with his group of staff remains stronger than ever, emphasised by the fact that the K Hotel managed to successfully negotiate the pandemic, an extremely challenging period for the industry, without losing any staff or delaying of salary payments thanks to an effective pro-active plan. He says: “I was brought up to believe that nothing is impossible if you have a vision and you fight to get it. You need always to think positive and don’t listen to people who are not prepared to grow. There are always challenges but you can overcome them. I have full trust in my team and I believe they trust me too, my door is always open and I think the culture of mutual loyalty which we have nurtured at the K Hotel is one of the main reasons behind its success.” The K Hotel’s popularity is undoubtedly due to its trendy décor. Mr Al Samahiji’s proudest improvement in his four-year tenure is the relaunch of both the K Lounge as a modern, ambient setting with a plethora of books, games and artworks to create a chilled vibe, and the K Tracks Lounge on the first floor which caters to sport and live entertainment fans. The hotel’s extensive food and beverage options are also attractive; this year saw the hotel host a Ramadan Tent for the first time, which was a huge success, while its KOLORS restaurant is a popular spot particularly for weekly brunches. Furthermore, the hotel has erected a giant LED screen on the building which has become a popular landmark in bustling Juffair, a leading innovation which other outlets are keen to emulate. As for the future, he says: “The K Hotel has an excellent name in the market, and I want to continue to develop that. I will also continue to maintain our top key accounts and corporate clients ensuring our loyal customers receive the service they deserve. We are also extremely proud of our monthly corporate social responsibility programmes which we will continue to push. “I also want to extend my sincerest thanks to the K Hotel team, owners, board members and also the wider Gulf Hotels Group, for the support they’ve shown me which allows me to operate as I do. “There’s a lot to look forward to in the future and I am excited for the challenges it will bring. I’m a proud Bahraini in a Bahraini company, and I want to set an example to young locals who want to get into the hospitality industry. There are big opportunities out there if you are willing to do the work necessary to get the job done, even when it lies outside your normal range. The best way to motivate hotel staff members is to be a manager who leads by example.” LEADING AT THE HELM The K Hotel has established itself as one of the trendiest four-star deluxe hotels in the Kingdom with Bahraini general manager Hussain Al Samahiji at the helm. He tells Kristian Harrison about his philosophy and the hotel’s next chapter.

Bahrainthismonth.com 20 July 2023 interview With 23 years of experience in the culinary industry, Chef Picco’s influences are spread across the continents. Originally from Kerala, India, a degree in Hotel Management and Catering Science and a Master’s in Business Administration was the gateway to a journey which included Dubai, Kenya, and Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean. Now, he’s back in the Kingdom for a third stint after previous tenures at the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain and the Royal Golf Club. Fresh off the back of winning ‘MENA Executive Chef of the Year,’ his latest position is his greatest challenge yet. “From my previous posting in Dubai, I knew some of the management team in Bahrain and what their beliefs are,” he explains. “I firmly stand by the philosophy of ‘don’t choose the location, choose the team,’ and so when the opportunity came to join them in Bahrain, it was an easy decision. “I need a place where I wake up happy to go to work, and I have that here. Bahrain is a beautiful place and the hotel itself is a monster! There’s a lot of things happening; when it comes to food and beverage operations, I don’t think there’s many hotels in the region which can do what we do with the number of outlets we have. “Not only that, but 10 of them are awardwinning in their own right and have their own native head chefs handling the restaurant, which is extremely rare but also ensures I get the best possible feedback.” Chef Picco prefers a hands-on style of management, hosting daily meetings with his team and can be regularly seen front-of-house, engaging with staff and customers alike to carefully curate menus together. One of his key initiatives is to give new introductions to the menu at least six months, with a belief that certain options and concepts take time to spread by word of mouth, or be tweaked and upgraded as need be rather than pulled too quickly if it isn’t selling. As for his culinary philosophy, Chef Picco sums it up succinctly. “I truly believe that good food brings peace and ultimate happiness,” he argues. “I always like a simple approach to food, when it comes to cooking and getting my ingredients together. There is always room for creativity, but I still believe in presenting something people can connect to. “The creativity comes more with the presentation. With the current social media generation, people eat with their eyes first! It’s rare now to see a guest actually eat their food when their food is put down in front of them without taking a picture first. “Ultimately, I am excited to put together my simple yet creative approach to food, offering our guests a good excuse to mingle at the table and relish a unique dining experience,” he concludes. The Gulf Hotel Bahrain is one of the Kingdom’s most prominent hospitality destinations. With a total of 17 outlets on its premises, an experienced hand is needed at the helm to ensure the operation runs butterysmooth. Luckily, the hotel’s new Executive Chef, Picco Alapatt, is the perfect man for the job, and Bahrain This Month sat down with him to find out why. Presenting Gastronomical Greatness!

Bahrainthismonth.com 26 July 2023 interview During a visit to the Kingdom to showcase their talents, Arab-Israeli chef Elias Mattar and dance choreographer Shlomi Elimelech sat down with Kristian Harrison to discuss their excitement at the opportunity to perform in Bahrain. Elias is the owner of Marta Deli, located in the northern Israeli port of Haifa, one of the most active delis in a city bustling with activities. It regularly has a vibrant atmosphere filled with music and excitement and every Friday it comes alive with live music, creating an ambience of joy. He is renowned as one of the most famous chefs in Israel and was asked to come to Bahrain to represent Israeli cuisine, showcasing diverse flavours from different regions of the country. Whether it's the northern, western or eastern side, each has its own famous dishes and spices, all of which Chef Elias represents with his unique touch. He explained: “It is my second time in Bahrain and I am very glad of the opportunity to represent my country here. It’s an honour to showcase some of my favourite fusions from Israel and a selection of cold cut meats, sliced cheeses, sandwiches, breads, salads and more. “I’ve brought some of my favourite spices from Israel from a number of regions and I really hope that the people of Bahrain enjoy my creations. Bahrain has a wonderful culinary tradition and I’m proud to contribute to it.” Shlomi is the director and choreographer of the dance group Tzuza, which was founded in 2006. Tzuza is a prominent name in the Israeli dance world, with more than 1,000 dancers of different ages on its books. The group performed a special show featuring 12 dancers with a stylistic video-art presentation, showcasing the history of the nation. The performance wowed onlookers in Bahrain with its stunning elements of dance, acrobatics and performing arts. The group participates in various productions carried out in collaboration with numerous social organisations and has now ticked Bahrain off in the list of countries it has brought joy to. Tzuza has performed at festivals and celebration in countries including the United States, South Korea, Mexico, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Brazil and many others over recent years. Shlomi was thrilled to bring the group’s amazing talent to the Kingdom. He says excitedly: “It’s an exciting experience to come to Bahrain with its history and the history of the region. The culture is unique and so we really had to do something special and pull out all the stops compared to performing somewhere like London. “The show is fully curated for where we are performing; every show is different. For example, here we used elements of Bahraini music, outfits and history. Israeli culture is actually very similar, especially when it comes to music, so I took local elements such as drums and the oud and crafted something which has foundations in both countries. “Our dancers are amazing and they have had a special buzz about performing in Bahrain for a long time. They’ve been working so diligently for months to be ready for the opportunity to perform in a country which very few of their peers have had the chance to visit is very special for them. “In art, it doesn’t matter where the show is coming from, but rather if people like it or not. The purpose of the show was to bring people together and regardless of where they are from and appreciate the wonderful spirit of dance,” he concludes. I thought when I joined, I’d see the world, but in fact I’ve just seen a narrow swathe which is the Middle East. I was previously in Bahrain from 2004-2007 so it was a wonderful opportunity to come back to the Kingdom, a place where I feel like I know the people and culture well. I have also served elsewhere in the Gulf in places including the UAE, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Afghanistan. I also worked on issues on the Middle East in Washington. You’re now in your second full year in Bahrain, in what ways is your job different now compared to when you first arrived? First and foremost, I arrived in early February 2022 when the pandemic was still on, which was hard for diplomats. As our Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said: “Diplomacy is a contact sport.” You have to meet people, shake hands and look one another in the eye to work out issues. Thankfully, due to Bahrain’s effective handling of the pandemic, we emerged out of that soon after which allowed citizens of Bahrain to see each other again. From a substantive point of view, also in February last year Russia invaded Ukraine which changed how the US works with Bahrain and other nations to push back on the unfair, unjust invasion of a peaceful nation. Following this, have your mission and goals shifted at all based on current events? What are the current main objectives of your ambassadorship? Firstly, my job is to build upon the very solid foundation of relations between the governments and people of the United States and Bahrain. We can go back 130 years when US citizens first came to Bahrain as missionaries who formed a hospital, school and church, all of which are incredibly still operating today. We’re proud of that legacy and the contributions still going on. We have this great depth of common understanding, of values that Bahrain and Americans share. It’s my job to build on that relationship, to make it ever stronger which we do in key areas such as the strategic realm where our military relationship deters our adversaries. The US is also working very hard to build Bahrain’s relationship with Israel through the Abraham Accords. Finally, we also have the commercial side and what I like to call the ‘values aspect’ of our foreign policy; human rights, civil society, democratic development, religious freedom and more. What have been your key observations of Bahrain now that you’ve had time to truly experience the country and its culture? Bahrain has grown substantially; in terms of population, infrastructure and also literally because of the land reclamation programme! The Kingdom is central to the regional economy and the focus on education and training skills so that Bahrainis can thrive in the global economy is something that’s new for me. It’s a focused and practical exercise to ensure that the next generation is ready to thrive economically, which is extremely wise. Of course, the kindness and spirit of the people hasn’t changed. Bahrain has been open to the world for thousands of years and that shines through. Friends, family and colleagues are all welcomed. I also admire how Bahrainis are willing to work hard which is not the case all over the world. What experiences in Bahrain, whether positive or challenging, have led to you becoming a better ambassador? Every day there are new challenges, surprises and more. I would say that the key thing for me is that I try to develop my leadership skills so that we as an embassy can make progress and achieve objectives. Leadership is an art not a science, you can’t go through a checklist but instead have to create an environment. This is both the greatest challenge and also the most satisfying aspect of what we do. Communication and empowering the staff to use their creativity, alongside monitoring our approach, is so important. I feel the need for prudent risk-taking; we have to look for opportunities to always do better. I like to compare it with snow skiing; if you’re doing it all day and don’t fall, you’re probably not pushing yourself. Similarly, in diplomacy we need to take risks to achieve objectives. How important is the US-Bahrain relationship when it comes to the maritime environment and protecting the US’ interests and safety in the Middle East? Our defence relationship is fundamental. Our first military deployment in the Gulf region was right here in 1947 when we launched our enduring presence, which still exists to this day. Maritime security is not just important to us but for the world, as a huge supply of the world’s energy comes through the Arabian Gulf and out into the economies of the world. Being able to project power to ensure commerce and trade continue unhindered with free movement of commercial vessels is an important aspect of prosperity and growth in the global economy. Our military relationship is blossoming. Bahrain recently became the first customer of our F-16 Block 70 aircraft, and the first one rolled off assembly a couple of months ago. This opens up a whole new area of military interoperability and all of us here at the embassy and the 8,000 strong military members work tirelessly with our Bahraini counterparts to achieve our common objectives. How does the US support the members of the US military in Bahrain? There is a whole suite of options available to our service members and their families, here, from mental health to physical health and also spiritual health. For example, we have a Chaplain Corps on base who provide pastoral and religious guidance to our team. We also provide the Bahrain School for children of our service members, following the American curriculum, and we are proud that many of Bahrain’s leaders including HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, are graduates. What is the current state of trade relations between the US and Bahrain? Do you have any specific figures? The commercial relationship is thriving. In 2022, the bilateral trade volume was USD2.85 billion, which is the second highest on record behind only 2018. We also noticed that Bahrain had a trade surplus with the United States meaning it was exporting more goods to the US than the other way. My job as an ambassador is to boost the export of US goods and services, and we have a free trade agreement in place to pursue that. What is a certainty is that commercially, we have more interactions, innovations and opportunities because of our relationship. The Export-Import Bank, a US government function that provides trade financing to export goods and services, is one of the ways in which we can support American exports into Bahrain. Secondly, we are working very carefully on resuming direct flights between the two countries with Gulf Air. The logistics are being ironed out, but when that happens, tourism, education, business and medical travel will increase tremendously. Finally, we are working closely with the Bahrain government on the United States Trade Zone, which provides a specific location for US companies to set up to do light manufacturing and logistics to pursue opportunities throughout the region. Anything else to add? I just want to reiterate that it’s an incredible honour to represent the government and people of the US here in Bahrain. The depth of the relationship is hard to fathom; we have common objectives and tend to see things in the same way. That doesn’t mean we don’t have disagreements, as even brothers fight! However, when we do disagree, we do so unemotionally and with great respect and appreciation for the other’s point of view. There’s nothing I’d rather be doing than what I am right here, right now. USA in Bahrain Bahrainthismonth.com 34 July 2023 His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, addressing Bahrain’s American expatriate community in April 2018, said: “Over a century ago, an intrepid young American named Samuel Zwemer travelled from New Jersey to Arabia with a noble mission in his heart. The medical dispensary he opened in Manama became a hospital that has saved countless lives. “This hospital is a testament to the American generosity of spirit – and a reminder of what we have in common. Here, in Bahrain, we have a hospital founded by a Christian mission, alongside mosques and churches, synagogues and temples. “In the USA, people of all faiths come to live the American Dream. We may be different nations, but we are united by this proud tradition of tolerance. Together, we share the dream of a world where we can all live alongside each other in peace and prosperity.” These words of HM King Hamad, on Samuel Zwemer, the founder of American Mission Hospital, are indicative of the early US relations with Bahrain, which have only grown from strength to strength over the decades. After arriving in Bahrain on December 7, 1892, Samuel Zwemer set up a dispensary to which people came for medicines, medical treatments, and minor surgeries. His clinic was located in the souq near the renowned Bab Al Bahrain area. The Bab Al Bahrain arch itself, however, was not built until almost 60 years later, in 1949. In 1896, on a visit to Baghdad, Zwemer met Amy Wilkes, an Australian missionary nurse at a hospital. The fact that she was a registered nurse trained in Sydney and serving in Mesopotamia, must have made him consider her as an ideal companion for life. So, they married at the British Consulate there. Once back in Bahrain, the couple ran the medical dispensary and conducted minor surgeries. But they kept writing to the ‘Arabian Mission’, headquartered in New York, that Bahrain needed a full-fledged hospital. So, in 1900, with the coming of a doctorcouple Dr. Sharon J Thoms and Dr. Marion Wells Thoms, who were medical graduates from Michigan State University, and now Bahrain’s first modern physicians, the formal healthcare movement in Bahrain started. Thanks to the permission of the then Hakim of Bahrain, Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, a piece of land was purchased in Manama, and the Mason Memorial Hospital was built and opened on January 26, 1903. Over time, however, it became known as the American Mission Hospital. Soon, Zwemer’s persuasive skills, through his prolific writing and through his preaching, which he did during his US tours in early 1900s, motivated many doctors, nurses, paramedics and teachers to join the mission. Both Dr. Sharon J Thoms and Dr. Stanley Mylrea, who served in Bahrain in 1910s, went on to set up the American Mission Hospitals in Muscat and Kuwait respectively. Dr. Paul Harrison and Dr. Louis P Dame used to visit Riyadh, to treat the family of Ibn Saud – who later became the first king of Saudi Arabia – and thousands of patients in Nejd, Arabia. Dr. Harold Storm used to visit Qatar and the Trucial States (which became UAE, later) to serve the people in those regions. Until after the oil boom in 1940s, when the local governments were able to set up government healthcare facilities, it was, in fact, the American Mission Hospitals that offered modern healthcare. On 26 January 2023, exactly 120 years after the first hospital in the region opened, the new King Hamad American Mission Hospital opened in Bahrain, making it the fifth and the largest of the facilities of the American Mission Hospital in Bahrain. Modern healthcare, of over 130 years, is but just one of the many sectors which bring the two nations, US and Bahrain, together.
