As the summer heat begins to really take hold and the Kingdom transitions into June, Bahrain This Month extends a heartfelt greeting to our readers. Following the successful conclusion of the historical 33rd Arab Summit hosted in Bahrain for the very first time, we reflect on the remarkable insights and collaborations fostered during this prestigious event. I was incredibly honoured to receive accreditation to the media centre and in this issue, I share my thoughts on its significance and its impact on the region's future. This month, we celebrate Father's Day by highlighting the profound impact fathers have on our lives. We take this opportune moment to reflect on the role of fatherhood in shaping individuals and families, offering a touching tribute to all the dads out there. Diplomacy once again takes centre stage as we commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Bahrain and Bangladesh. Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Bangladesh, Mr. A.K.M. Mohiuddin Kayes, sat down with BTM to discuss the steadfast bonds and cooperation that have defined the past five decades, and what lies ahead for our two nations. We also spotlight Brent Cataneo-Amad, a young Filipino piano virtuoso who is set to dazzle audiences at the iconic Carnegie Hall in New York with his extraordinary talent. Brent’s journey is an inspiring tale of passion and dedication, and one we are delighted to share with our readers. In hospitality, we feature Thibault de Vries, who shares insights into his illustrious career and the exciting developments at the Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain. Similarly, Farah Baig spoke with Branimir ‘Bane’ Radosavljevic, General Manager of SUSHISAMBA Bahrain, to learn more about the buzz surrounding this innovative dining destination at the Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour. We also discovered Salman Hubail’s inspiring journey from a security officer to the esteemed Director of Safety and Security at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa. We have our usual suite of listings highlighting the best of Bahrain’s entertainment and dining options, our look at the latest media filling your TV screens, phones and ears in Downtime, and our review of the best new chic place in town, Café Gourmandise at the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. Our motoring section this month has two special highlights; Kristian Harrison’s spectacular trip to Stuttgart, Germany with Porsche for the launch of the new Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid, and Edwin D’Souza’s electrifying test drive of the Mercedes EQE 350+, a futuristic electric sedan. Our guest columnist, Pria Masson, guides us through the art of budgeting, building on the concept of balance discussed in last month’s column to aid you in managing finances effectively. You may notice that I haven’t mentioned Woman This Month yet… and that’s because this month it has its own standalone issue packed full of amazing content including the big reveal related to our Woman of The Year Awards programme in December 2024 that I will leave you to discover in Woman This Month’s June edition! Bahrainthismonth.com 14 June 2024 Red House Marketing Chairman and Bahrain This Month Publisher, George Middleton, shares his thoughts following the conclusion of the 33rd Arab Summit hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain on May 16. The air crackled with an electric mix of anticipation and apprehension as I arrived at the media centre based at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa which had direct tele-links with Al Sakhir Palace where the 33rd Arab League Summit took place in the middle of May 2024. Leaders from across the Arab world, with an urgent commitment, gathered for a crucial meeting against a backdrop of ongoing regional tensions and the ever-present Palestinian issue. The summit’s theme, “Arab Unity and Cooperation: A Pathway to a Secure and Prosperous Future,” hung heavily in the air. Optimistic pronouncements of solidarity echoed through the halls, but still, one could sense the weight of current challenges in the pursuit of peace and justice. The most significant takeaway was the renewed focus on the Palestinian question. Frustration with the stalled peace process ran high. Leaders unanimously called for a UN-backed international peace conference on Palestinian statehood, urging the UN Security Council to revisit its recent resolution. It was a pleasure to witness the successful organisation of the summit under the direct auspices of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa as they went to great pains to emphasise the need for regional cooperation in crucial sectors. Healthcare collaboration garnered considerable interest, with discussions focusing on establishing a unified strategy to address the ongoing struggles of war-torn areas. This resonated deeply with delegates from countries grappling with refugee crises and internal conflicts. Additionally, the summit saw a push for joint Arab initiatives in the burgeoning field of financial technology, aiming to leverage the region’s vast potential in this domain. While the summit concluded with affirmations of Arab solidarity, the road ahead remains uncertain. The success of the proposed international peace conference for Palestine hangs in the balance of overcoming internal divisions and crafting a unified Arab strategy. Additionally, translating the rhetoric of economic cooperation into concrete action will require overcoming decades old rivalries in a new era of trust and cooperation amongst the member states. Only time will tell if the Arab League Summit in Bahrain can translate its aspirations into tangible results. However, the gathering served as a potent reminder that the future of the Arab world lies in collaborative efforts to overcome current challenges and foster a more secure and prosperous region. For me, the experience of having been media accredited to one of the most august and impactful political gatherings of our time, was an absolute honour and privilege. It also filled me with immense pride to be able to witness the Kingdom of Bahrain’s successful planning and implementation of such a major international convocation so seamlessly and efficiently. As well as witnessing the events taking place at the Arab League Summit at Sakhir Palace via a direct teleconference link, we were able to participate in a press conference physically attended by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, HE Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, together with Ahmed Aboul Gheit the Secretary-General of the Arab League. Almost every journalist in the room had their hand raised although most, like me, were unsuccessful in their quest to question the leaders present due to the sheer numbers involved. I am glad for the experience and look forward to future opportunities to participate in similar events orchestrated by the National Communication Centre and The Ministry of Information in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Golden Jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Bahrain will be celebrated on June 6. To mark this momentous occasion, Kristian Harrison sat down with the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Bangladesh, Mr. A.K.M. Mohiuddin Kayes, and discussed the last 50 years of co-operation whilst looking ahead to strengthening steadfast bonds in the coming years. What is the history of cooperation between Bangladesh and Bahrain, and what are the key areas of this relationship? Bahrain was the first GCC country to establish diplomatic relations with Bangladesh on June 6, 1974 shortly after a meeting between the late Emir of Bahrain, Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, and our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during the 1974 OIC Summit. The two brotherly nations are continuing to maintain excellent ties based on mutual trust and shared values under the able leadership of our Honourable Prime Minister, HE Sheikh Hasina and HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The key areas of our cooperation are manpower, trade and commerce, agriculture, civil aviation, culture, people-to-people contact and more. How does the Bangladesh Embassy in Bahrain support the Bangladeshi diaspora residing in Bahrain? Since the Embassy’s establishment in 1983, we have been providing various consular as well as labourwelfare related services to the Bangladeshi nationals residing in the Kingdom in addition to seeking ways to further strengthen our diplomatic and economic ties with Bahrain. Most recently, during my tenure, we introduced free medical treatment services and more than 10,000 Bangladeshis benefited from this service so far. We also started providing free weekly legal consultations with Bahraini lawyers to ensure our citizens’ safety and rights. Moreover, we periodically organise mobile consular camps to make our services more accessible to our people, and we also began organising awareness-raising seminars in collaboration with various local ministries. I am also very happy to announce that we have commenced the construction of a Bangladesh School building in A’ali under the name of our Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, to provide quality education at an affordable price. Here, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to HM King Hamad for graciously donating the school plot and we also convey our heartfelt gratitude to HE Sheikh Hasina for funding the school building construction project. HIGHLIGHTING 50 YEARS OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS interview 18 June 2024 Bahrainthismonth.com

Bahrainthismonth.com What initiatives or programmes does the Embassy undertake to promote cultural exchange and understanding between Bangladesh and Bahrain? We are constantly seeking new avenues to strengthen cultural ties. We have arranged several photography and art exhibitions throughout the Kingdom in collaboration with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, National Council for Arts, and various art galleries in Bahrain. We also screened a biographical film of our Father of the Nation named Mujib: The Making of a Nation in a renowned cinema hall last year, where around 250 people, comprising nearly 100 foreign dignitaries, enjoyed the film. Most recently, in April, we celebrated Bangla New Year 1431 in a joyous atmosphere, where foreign dignitaries and other guests enjoyed our delicious Bangladeshi cuisine and our mesmerising cultural performances. Over the years, we have also partnered with the UN Bahrain team and all private schools in Bahrain to observe the International Mother Language Day on February 21 in a befitting manner. This year, we exhibited over 90 artworks drawn by schoolchildren from all over Bahrain. Furthermore, we actively take part in various fairs throughout the year, particularly the International Embassy Bazaar, to showcase our traditional Bangladeshi products like jamdhani sarees, jute items, leather goods and teas. We are also working towards promoting the culture of Bahrain in Bangladesh as evidenced by our Visit Bangladesh programme, where several Bahraini journalists and other media personnel are provided with complimentary trips to Bangladesh to further bolster our commitment to enhancing cultural exchange. What is the current estimate for the Bangladeshi population in Bahrain and in what ways does Bangladesh contribute to the workforce and economy of Bahrain? Approximately 150,000 Bangladeshis are living in Bahrain today, which makes us the second largest expat community in Bahrain. We have doctors, professors and engineers who are working at renowned hospitals, universities and other institutions. Some also own small and medium enterprises, including shops, restaurants, agencies and other private establishments. Of course, a majority of Bangladeshis here have blue collar jobs, particularly in the construction sector. The workforce and economy of Bahrain are being greatly benefited from skilled Bangladeshi expatriates. Our people have contributed immensely to the infrastructure of Bahrain and we are well regarded as very hardworking and trustworthy individuals. Could you provide insights into any recent agreements or collaborations between Bangladesh and Bahrain? We signed three important bilateral instruments in 2015. One is related to avoidance of double taxation; another is the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments; and the third one is Foreign Office Consultation, the first of which was held in 2022. Additionally, a few agreements and MoUs are currently in the pipeline to be signed in the next round of FOC in Dhaka and a number of high-level meetings between delegations have taken place. What are the current challenges or opportunities in enhancing bilateral relations, and how does the Embassy address them? Currently we are facing a challenge in getting necessary visas for Bangladeshis. However, the Embassy is pursuing a process to ease the obtaining of visas as we aim to encourage trade, business, investment, tourism and cultural exchange. We are also working towards having more high-level visits between the two nations, as we think this would foster stronger political, economic and cultural ties. Can you share any upcoming events or initiatives organised by the Embassy? We are going to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic relations with Bahrain in a grand fashion at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa. On this auspicious occasion, we will unveil a special logo of our golden jubilee in collaboration with the Bahraini side. We have already secured the messages from our Honourable Prime Minister and our Honourable Foreign Minister on this great occasion. In addition to this, we are planning to organise more awareness-raising seminars and trade fairs to strengthen our existing ties. How does the Embassy contribute to promoting tourism and investment opportunities in Bangladesh to Bahraini citizens and businesses? I met with the Minister of Industry and Commerce of Bahrain, HE Abdullah bin Adel Fakhro just last month, and he showed his keen interest for having more trade and investment opportunities between Bangladesh and Bahrain, particularly in the sectors of pharmaceuticals, ICT, green energy, agricultural and frozen products, ready-made garments, textiles, ceramics, jute products and leather goods. I am positive that once the visa issuance process for Bangladeshi nationals becomes much easier, the tourism and investment sectors of both countries will see an exponential increase. Our country is renowned for the longest natural sea beach in the world, Cox’s Bazar; the world’s largest mangrove forest, Sundarbans; eye-catching tea gardens in Sylhet; the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and our numerous scenic rivers which attract a large crowd of tourists each year. Do you have anything more to add? I would like to take this opportunity to thank HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister HRH Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and the friendly people of Bahrain for their warm hospitality and creating a supportive environment to our expat community. To my fellow Bangladeshis in Bahrain, I would like to urge you all to uphold the positive image of our country by following the rules and regulations of Bahrain. Finally, I would like to thank the Bahrain This Month team for interviewing me for the latest edition of this wonderful magazine. May the friendship between Bangladesh and Bahrain live long! interview June 2024 19

Bahrainthismonth.com 22 June 2024 Could you give our readers a brief history on your illustrious career and professional experience to date? I began my career in Switzerland after graduating from EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne in 2005. Joining the Hyatt Hotels, I travelled extensively; working in Singapore, Bangkok, Paris and Johannesburg. I spent almost a decade in Russia, with assignments in Moscow and Sochi, the latter during its hosting of the 2014 Olympic Games. More recently, I moved to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup and, as of last December, I’m privileged to be the General Manager of the Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain. How has your international experience contributed to shaping your career and expertise? Adaptability is key. Working in diverse countries has taught me to quickly adapt to new cultures and ways of doing things. Each region has imparted valuable lessons that I bring to my role in Bahrain. This global perspective helps me understand and meet the varied expectations of our international guests. What do you consider to be your greatest achievements in the field of hospitality to date? I wouldn’t say there’s one single achievement that stands out. Across the various hotels and properties I’ve worked at, we’ve consistently enhanced the guest experience and improved the financial health of the establishments. A significant personal achievement is maintaining lasting relationships with colleagues and guests from my previous roles. This TALKING HOSPITALITY Nestled along the pristine coastline of south-west Bahrain, the Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain is rapidly becoming a beacon of luxury and innovation in the region’s hospitality sector. At the helm of this opulent establishment is Thibault de Vries, a seasoned professional whose extensive international experience and passion for hospitality has positioned him to lead this remarkable property. In an interview with Kristian Harrison, Mr. de Vries shares insights into his illustrious career, the exciting developments at the hotel, and his vision for the future of the resort. interview

interview Bahrainthismonth.com June 2024 23 network of connections has enriched my career immensely. As the General Manager of Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain, what do you consider to be your primary goals? Initially, our focus is on building a dedicated and motivated team. It’s through our colleagues that we can deliver exceptional guest experiences. We’re also working on creating unique guest experiences, or what I like to call ‘wow moments,’ that go beyond expectations. Another goal is to activate more activities within the hotel to ensure guests have a comprehensive and engaging resort experience, given our distance from Manama. How important is having a diverse and dynamic team in your operations? Diversity is crucial. We purposefully seek a mix of backgrounds, genders, nationalities and experiences. For me, hiring is about attitude, motivation and passion. Skills can be trained, but a positive attitude and a sense of humour are essential. Being aware of global events is also important, as it helps our staff connect with international and knowledgeable guests. The property recently unveiled its new brand identity. What are the key elements of growth that the property will undergo as it takes on this new venture? The Jumeirah brand has always been about warmth, which is reflected in our updated logo featuring three flames symbolising generosity, joy and warmth. We aim to bring these elements to life in all guest interactions. Over the next few months and years, we’ll be focusing on how we can infuse these values into every aspect of our guest experience, from check-in procedures to dining experiences. What are your thoughts on the hospitality sector in Bahrain? How does this property diversify in a competitive environment? Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain is uniquely positioned as a true resort destination on the island. Unlike any other property here, we offer a complete disconnection from the hustle of Manama, creating a bubble of relaxation and luxury. Our extensive facilities, including multiple swimming pools, a private beach, an award-winning 2.5km2 spa, and diverse dining options, set us apart. We’re also the latest five-star luxury hotel in Bahrain, offering unparalleled experiences. The property recently launched the Mar Y Mas concept. What makes the experience so special and what can visitors expect in terms of entertainment and dining? Mar Y Mas is an adult-only experience at our infinity pool, available every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It features a live DJ from 2pm, a mix of Peruvian and Mexican cuisine bringing together vibrant flavours from both cultures, and evening fire shows. This concept is designed to provide a unique and vibrant atmosphere for our adult guests, offering a distinct and engaging experience. Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain has a stunning beach and sprawling pools. What can the people of Bahrain and visitors expect at the property over summer as temperatures rise? All our swimming pools are temperaturecontrolled, ensuring a refreshing dip even in the hottest weather. Bahrainthismonth.com 30 June 2024 Having noticed his great memory, advanced mathematical abilities and advanced sense of rhythm, Brent’s mother encouraged him to take piano lessons when he was just six years old. “I had actually bought him a piano two years prior, but his piano teacher suggested giving him time to mature, as lessons require more focus and concentration,” she says. By the time he was five, he started drum lessons but preferred learning with his mother around. Gradually, Brent started to get into the rhythm. “However, the pandemic forced schools to close, so I encouraged him to start piano lessons at home,” she explains. To balance his academics and extracurricular activities, Brent followed a routine which included online lessons, playtime and practice sessions. She also instructed his piano teacher to teach him more challenging pieces, despite which, Brent performed admirably academically, receiving A+ grades and awards. By the time he was seven, Brent passed the Trinity College of London Grade 1 piano exam with a ‘Distinction’. He even learned 13 songs for his 7th birthday live piano recital, including the compositions of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Fur Elise and Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer. Now, his remarkable dedication and skills have earned him a spot on one of the world’s most prestigious stages where he will be showcasing his ability to master complex classical compositions. “Having taken home two prizes from his first international competition at the World Classical Music Awards in Europe, he entered the London Young Musician competition, where he fortunately earned bronze once more. He also participated in the Gulf Musician Idol 2022, where he bagged the Gold Medal despite the fact that his rivals were a few years older,” she explains. Having grown more comfortable competing internationally, in November 2023, Brent attempted to enter the American Protégé International Music Competition. “Late last year we learned that he had won and that one of his prizes was an invitation to perform at the Carnegie Hall,” she says happily. “We were stunned by the opportunity to play at the iconic venue since it’s one of the most prominent competitions in the USA, drawing a big field of young prodigies and competitors from over 70 countries. We are so delighted; it’s beyond our imagination!” says the proud mother. Brent has chosen to play Rondo Alla Turca composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, because of the pace and his love for the song. He has persevered to master the piece over the last year and, despite the challenge, had to learn quickly to meet the deadline for the upcoming competition. Discipline, values and good behaviour have proved to be cornerstones in Brent’s upbringing. In fact, while his mother considers piano lessons and academics to be essential, she believes allowing him to be a child and have fun while creating great memories is imperative. Brent shares that his favourite composers are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig Van Beethoven. He plans to participate in international piano competitions if opportunities arise. “I dream to be able to play other instruments like the guitar. I think playing musical instruments helps me to be more confident. I believe I will continue doing sports and music,” he says. Brent’s busy year will see him performing at Carnegie Hall, participating in swimming, taekwondo, biking, art classes and taking up guitar lessons to expand his musical skills. He plans to continue piano lessons to improve technique and prepare for future international competitions. Bahrainthismonth.com 32 June 2024 CELEBRATING FATHERHOOD In the tapestry of life, fathers weave an intricate and indispensable thread. As Father’s Day approaches on June 16, Edwin D’Souza takes this opportune moment to reflect on the profound impact fathers have in shaping our lives. Beyond providing material support, fathers play a crucial role in nurturing emotional resilience, instilling values and fostering personal development. Every child looks at their father as a hero and as children we don’t often see what is behind the mask of being a hero. Our fathers go through a lot of silent suffering for several years in the hopes of giving their children a safe upbringing. Fathers serve as pillars of strength and stability within the family unit. Their unwavering presence offers a sense of security and reassurance to children, creating a nurturing environment where they can thrive. Whether it’s offering a comforting embrace after a long day or providing guidance during challenging times, fathers serve as beacons of support, imparting a sense of confidence and self-assurance that resonates throughout a child’s life. Fathers play a pivotal role in shaping a child’s identity and values. Through their actions and words, fathers transmit core principles such as integrity, resilience and perseverance. By serving as positive role models, they instill a moral compass that guides children through life’s myriad challenges. Whether it’s teaching the importance of honesty through their own honesty or demonstrating the value of hard work through their dedication, fathers impart invaluable lessons that serve as the foundation for a child’s character development. Meaningful interactions and shared experiences between father and child forge deep connections. The best memories we have as grownups is when we spent the best of times with our parents at the beach or when our fathers had us sit in the driver’s seat and steer the car around. We thought we were controlling the vehicle but it was always them. Well, that’s the whole point; they always made us feel empowered and believe we are capable of something and no less than any other person in the world. These moments of bonding have not only strengthened the father-child relationship but provided us with a sense of belonging and acceptance. It’s undeniable that they also play a vital role in fostering intellectual development and academic success. Research has consistently shown that children with involved fathers tend to perform better in school, exhibit higher levels of cognitive development and are more likely to pursue higher education. Through their engagement in activities such as reading together, exploring the world around them and encouraging curiosity, fathers stimulate intellectual growth and curiosity in their children, laying the groundwork for future success. By modelling healthy relationships and communication skills, fathers teach children how to navigate interpersonal dynamics and cultivate meaningful connections with others. Whether it’s through their interactions with family members, friends or colleagues, fathers demonstrate the importance of empathy, respect and compassion, instilling valuable interpersonal skills that serve children well throughout their lives. Moreover, they play a crucial role in fostering resilience too. Through their encouragement and support, they demonstrate how to navigate adversity, overcome challenges and bounce back from setbacks. By providing a safe space for expression and validation, fathers empower children to embrace their emotions and develop healthy coping mechanisms. Fathers are irreplaceable figures in the lives of their children, wielding a profound influence that extends far beyond the boundaries of the family unit. As we celebrate Father’s Day, let us honour and cherish the invaluable contributions of fathers everywhere, recognising the enduring legacy they leave in the hearts and minds of their children.
