bahrainthismonth.com | MARCH 2025 INTERVIEW 12 Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down with us, Excellency. Firstly, can you tell us about your diplomatic career to date? I am honoured to serve as the Jordanian Ambassador to Bahrain, building on my extensive experience in diplomacy, governance and youth development. Previously, I was the first Secretary General of the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, strengthening ties between legislative and executive authorities. I also chaired the Parties Affairs Committee under the 2015 Political Parties Law. I have held key roles, including Minister of Youth, Advisor to the Prime Minister and board member of major economic institutions. Before my diplomatic career, I served in the Jordanian Armed Forces. I hold a Master’s in Private Law and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. Jordan and Bahrain share strong historical ties. What is the current state of bilateral relations and how do you foresee their evolution in the coming years? Jordanian-Bahraini relations are built on strong, brotherly ties, strengthened by HM King Abdullah II and HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Both nations share aligned visions on regional and international issues, particularly the Palestinian cause, advocating a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as Palestine’s capital. Looking ahead, their partnership is set to grow, with increased cooperation across economic, security and cultural sectors, achieving tangible progress on the ground. What are the key areas of cooperation between Jordan and Bahrain, particularly in trade, investment and Fintech? On January 5, 2023 we held the 5th session of the JordanianBahraini Joint Higher Committee meetings in Manama, hosted by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. During this meeting many agreements were signed. Jordan this year, will host the 6th session of the JordanianBahraini Joint Higher Committee meetings in Amman. Jordan and Bahrain have strong trade and investment ties, with an increasing focus on emerging sectors. Both nations recognise the importance of innovation and digital transformation in financial services. Building a Strong Future His Excellency Rami Saleh Wreikat Al Adwan, Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the Kingdom of Bahrain, discusses the enduring Jordan-Bahrain ties in this exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month.
bahrainthismonth.com | MARCH 2025 INTERVIEW 13 Given the current geopolitical challenges in the region, how do Jordan and Bahrain collaborate on maintaining regional stability and security? Stating from the special relations, both countries’ consultations regarding regional issues and challenges are regularly and openly discussed, and we share a high level of coordination in this regard. Jordan and Bahrain play a pivotal role in counterterrorism efforts and peacekeeping initiatives, additionally a key partner in ensuring maritime security and supporting regional defence alliances. How has Jordan been actively involved in humanitarian efforts, particularly regarding refugees? Jordan continues to uphold its humanitarian role, hosting a large number of refugees, which accounts for 30 percent of its population. The international community must bear its responsibility for refugees, as the most recent influx was the Syrian refugee crisis, with approximately 1.3 million refugees. This has increased pressure on Jordan’s economy, particularly concerning the unemployment rate among Jordanian youth. In addition to the pressure on the infrastructure and the natural resources especially for hosting communities. Education and cultural exchanges play a significant role in strengthening relations between countries. Are there any new initiatives between Jordan and Bahrain to promote these fields? Education and cultural ties between Jordan and Bahrain continue to strengthen through various agreements. The Executive Programme for Educational Cooperation (20232025) promotes collaboration in developing educational systems, exchanging expertise in education technology and enhancing cooperation in higher education and research. In 2023 and 2024, Jordan’s Ministry of Education recognised seven new Bahraini institutions, including Bahrain University College, the American University of Bahrain and the British University of Bahrain. Previously recognised universities include the University of Bahrain, Arabian Gulf University and RCSI Bahrain. These efforts reinforce the strong educational and research partnerships between both nations, fostering deeper academic and cultural collaboration. If a Bahraini visitor were to visit Jordan for the first time, what are the top three places or experiences you would recommend? Jordan offers a wealth of must-visit destinations, complemented by the warm hospitality of its people. Amman, the vibrant capital, blends history with modern culture, featuring landmarks like the Citadel and Roman Theatre. Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases stunning rock-cut architecture, while Wadi Rum’s desert landscapes offer adventure and Bedouin hospitality. Visitors can also experience the serene waters of the Dead Sea and Red Sea, explore the historic ruins of Um Qays, and visit the sacred Baptism Site at the Jordan River. As Bahrain’s longest-standing diplomat, how have your family settled here and enjoyed spending a major part of their lives here? What distinguishes Bahrainis most is their kindness and generosity. As a Jordanian diplomat, Bahrain has been a welcoming second home for my family and me. Over the years, we have built strong friendships and embraced the warm hospitality of its people. The country’s diverse culture, vibrant community and family-friendly environment have made our experience truly enriching. We have enjoyed exploring Bahrain’s heritage, engaging in community events and forming meaningful connections that we will always cherish. Scan to watch the video

Stepping Out Of Comfort Zones After a rollercoaster stint in the Bigg Boss house, actor Vivian Dsena opens up about life’s challenges, his self-discoveries and the role Bahrain plays in keeping him grounded. bahrainthismonth.com | MARCH 2025 INTERVIEW 17 “I worked on managing my anger. It’s a very human emotion, but Bigg Boss taught me to stay calm and composed even in difficult situations.” - Vivian Dsena Scan to watch the video Mr. Dsena’s time on Bigg Boss was nothing short of transformative. Reflecting on his journey, the actor described the experience as “a roller coaster ride,” marked by emotional highs and lows. “Bigg Boss’ house is a place where your emotions are on the surface. There are moments where you feel like losing your cool, but you have to stay calm and true to yourself,” Mr. Dsena shares. One of the most challenging aspects for him was adapting to the captive reality format. “The idea of being confined was very challenging, which is why I said no to the show for many years. Finally, thanks to my wife and the show’s team, I decided to challenge myself,” he says. The separation from his family was particularly tough, given his close bond with them. “I’m someone who likes to stay in touch with my family every day, if not every hour. That was the hardest part.” Mr. Dsena also discovered new facets of his personality during the show. “I worked on managing my anger. It’s a very human emotion, but Bigg Boss taught me to stay calm and composed even in difficult situations,” he explains. Overcoming the fear of being in a confined space and learning to control his temper were significant milestones for him. Away from the glare of cameras, Bahrain holds a special place in Mr. Dsena’s heart. “Bahrain is like a second home. It’s peaceful, relaxing and helps me maintain my sanity amidst the chaos of work. It’s my getaway from the professional hustle,” he says. The country’s calm environment and his family’s presence on the island make it his perfect retreat. Despite not being overly social in Bahrain, Mr. Dsena has felt an overwhelming sense of recognition and support. “Surprisingly, not just Indians but even Bahraini fans have shown me immense love, especially during Bigg Boss. It’s heartwarming to receive such support in a place where I haven’t even worked,” he notes. Looking ahead, Mr. Dsena remains grounded and grateful. “God has been kind. My fans have made me who I am today. I’m just a hardworking guy, but the credit goes to them. I promise to continue entertaining in my own way,” he concludes with heartfelt gratitude.

bahrainthismonth.com | MARCH 2025 RAMADAN 20 Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a sacred period marked by fasting, prayer and reflection. Observed by Muslims worldwide, this month commemorates the revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). During Ramadan, from dawn to sunset, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and other physical needs to purify the soul, refocus attention on Allah and practise self-discipline and sacrifice. In Bahrain, Ramadan is celebrated with great reverence and community spirit. The days are punctuated by the soothing sounds of prayer, while the nights come alive with families and friends gathering to break their fasts together. Iftar, the meal eaten after sunset, features a spread of succulent dishes ranging from local specialties to international cuisines. As night falls, the festivities continue with Ghabga, a vibrant, latenight gathering that serves as a prelude to Suhoor, the final meal in the early hours before the fast resumes. In this feature, Bahrain This Month dives into the heart of these celebrations, with a particular focus on exploring the eclectic dining options available during Ramadan. Our feature will guide readers through the best Iftar and Ghabga experiences across the Kingdom’s amazing spectrum of hospitality venues, highlighting not only traditional Bahraini fare but also innovative culinary delights that cater to the cosmopolitan palate. Beyond gastronomy, we will also shed light on Ramadan’s cultural significance, take a look at the events happening in our community and offer advice on how to keep fit and battle fatigue in this unique month. Celebrating the Holy Month Ramadan
Maintaining fitness during Ramadan can be challenging, especially when balancing fasting with daily routines. However, with mindful adjustments to your workout schedule and lifestyle, it is possible to stay active and healthy throughout the holy month. The key lies in listening to your body, staying hydrated during non-fasting hours and adopting a flexible approach to exercise. Fasting for long hours can lead to lower energy levels, making it important to choose the right time for physical activity. Many find that exercising after Iftar, once the body is replenished with food and water, is the most effective. This allows for more intense workouts without the risk of dehydration or fatigue. For those who prefer exercising before Iftar, opting for lighter activities like walking or gentle stretching can help maintain fitness without overexertion. Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining energy and overall health. Drinking sufficient water between Iftar and Suhoor helps replenish fluids lost during the Staying Fit During Ramadan Bahrain This Month’s resident health buff, Edwin D’Souza, offers his advice to help you stay active, nourished and hydrated for a balanced and healthy Ramadan. day, reducing the risk of dehydration, especially in warmer climates such as one experiences in Bahrain. Including hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables in meals can also support fluid balance. It is advisable to avoid caffeinated drinks, as they can lead to increased fluid loss. Nutrition is equally important during Ramadan. Consuming balanced meals rich in complex carbohydrates, lean proteins and healthy fats can provide sustained energy throughout the fasting hours. Foods with a low glycaemic index help release energy slowly, keeping you fuller for longer. Avoiding heavy, greasy foods can prevent sluggishness and digestive discomfort, allowing for better performance during physical activities. Rest and recovery should not be overlooked. The altered sleep patterns during Ramadan can impact physical performance, making it essential to prioritise quality rest. Short naps during the day can help compensate for reduced night-time sleep, ensuring the body remains energised and ready for exercise. Ultimately, staying fit during Ramadan is about balance. It is not necessary to push yourself to achieve personal bests or maintain the same workout intensity as usual. Instead, focusing on consistency, mindful movement and proper nutrition will help maintain your fitness levels without compromising your health. Embracing a flexible routine that aligns with the spiritual and physical demands of Ramadan can lead to a fulfilling and healthy month. bahrainthismonth.com | MARCH 2025 RAMADAN 21 TOP 5 RAMADAN PRE-WORKOUT SNACKS • Dates with Almond Butter • Greek Yoghurt with Berries and Honey • Banana with a Handful of Nuts • Oats with Milk and Chia Seeds • Boiled Eggs with Whole Grain Toast
bahrainthismonth.com | MARCH 2025 RAMADAN 22 Respecting Ramadan Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. For non-Muslims living or working in a Muslim-majority society, understanding its significance and being mindful of certain customs can help create a respectful and harmonious environment. Fasting and Public Etiquette During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from food, drink, smoking and other physical needs. While non-Muslims are not expected to fast, it is important to be considerate of those who do. Avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public spaces, including offices, cars and common areas, as this can be seen as disrespectful and could actually land you a fine or even prison in Bahrain. Many restaurants and cafes remain closed during daylight hours, and some places may have designated areas where nonfasting individuals can eat discreetly. Workplace Considerations Colleagues who are fasting may experience lower energy levels, particularly in the late afternoon. Being patient and offering support where possible can make a significant difference. If work schedules allow, consider taking on extra tasks or adjusting meeting times to accommodate those who may find it difficult to focus during fasting hours. Some workplaces implement shorter working hours for Muslim employees, so flexibility and understanding are key during this time. Social Interactions and Greetings Muslims often increase their spiritual and charitable activities during Ramadan, spending more time in prayer and self-reflection. If greeting someone during this month, the phrase ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ or ‘Ramadan Kareem’ is a thoughtful way to show respect. Be mindful that social gatherings may be postponed until after sunset, when the fast is broken with the Iftar meal. If invited to an Iftar, it is polite to accept, and bringing a small gift, such as dates or sweets, is a kind gesture. Understanding Changes in Daily Life Life in a Muslim-majority society changes noticeably during Ramadan. Businesses, government offices and schools may operate on reduced hours, while nightlife becomes more vibrant after Iftar. Roads and public transport may be particularly busy before sunset as people rush home to break their fast. Planning ahead and allowing extra travel time can help avoid frustration. Respecting Prayer and Religious Observances Muslims engage in additional prayers during Ramadan, particularly the nightly Taraweeh prayers. Be mindful of this when scheduling events or making social plans. If you live near a mosque, you may notice an increase in late-night activity and early morning prayers. Showing patience and respect for these observances fosters goodwill and community spirit. By demonstrating understanding and making small adjustments, non-Muslims can contribute to a more inclusive and respectful environment during Ramadan. Acknowledging the significance of this sacred month and supporting Muslim friends, colleagues and neighbours helps strengthen social bonds and mutual respect.

bahrainthismonth.com | MARCH 2025 The word Gerga’oon is believed to derive from the Gulf Arabic term referring to the sound of sweets rattling in bags as children collect their treats. Sometimes known as ‘the Bahraini Halloween’, it is celebrated in the middle of the Holy Month, serving as a moment to recognise the fasting efforts of young children while strengthening social bonds within neighbourhoods. Traditionally, children dress in colourful embroidered attire – boys wearing white thobes with gold or silver embellishments and girls donning bright dresses with gold jewellery and elaborate headpieces. The evening begins with children gathering in groups, moving door to door across their neighbourhoods while singing traditional Gerga’oon songs. Their chants include blessings upon the household and requests for sweets, nuts or small gifts. Residents warmly welcome the children, offering treats in decorative bags or bowls, symbolising the generosity and hospitality that are deeply embedded in Bahraini culture. One of the most popular chants includes the phrase: ‘Aatona Allah Ya’atikom, Bait Makkah Ywaddikom’ meaning: ‘Give to us and may Allah give to you; may He send you to the House in Mecca.’ Such verses reflect the spiritual aspect of Gerga’oon, intertwining faith and festivity. Beyond the sweets and songs, Gerga’oon holds a deeper significance in Bahrain. It fosters a sense of community, reminding families of the importance of neighbourly bonds and collective celebration. In an age where modern lifestyles can lead to social detachment, Gerga’oon revives traditional values, encouraging unity and strengthening familial and communal ties. GERGA’OON: Bahrain’s Joyful Tradition Gerga’oon is one of Bahrain’s most famous traditions. A mid-Ramadan celebration, it unites communities through children’s songs, traditional dress and the sharing of sweets, reflecting values of generosity, unity and cultural heritage. The celebration also instils key virtues in children such as sharing, gratitude and respect for elders. Participating in Gerga’oon teaches them about the spirit of giving and the value of kindness which are central tenets of Ramadan. In recent years, the celebration has evolved to include larger gatherings and commercial elements. Shopping centres and community halls host Gerga’oon events with businesses creating themed decorations and sweet packages. While this modernisation brings convenience, many Bahrainis remain keen to preserve the traditional home-based spirit of the occasion. Gerga’oon also plays a role in cultural preservation. Through its unique blend of song, dress and ritual, it passes down Bahraini heritage to younger generations. It is a celebration that bridges past and present, ensuring that the values of generosity, unity and faith endure within Bahraini society. RAMADAN 24
