lifestyle Bahrainthismonth.com 18 November 2024 TEEING OFF FOR CHARITY 25 years of American Mission Hospital’s Golf Tournament This year, the AMH Island Classic Annual Charity Golf Tournament will be celebrating its 25th year, with the latest edition scheduled to take place on November 14, 15 and 16 November at His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s Private Golf Course in Saffriya. Flashback: In 1997, when His Majesty King Hamad, then Crown Prince, was meeting the organisers of the 1st Island Classic Golf Tournament. Seen, from left to right, are Dr Paul Armerding, then CMO of AMH, with Michael Langton and Salman Abbasi. The golfers at the first tournament in 1997. A signboard announcing the 1999 tournament. “We thank our kind patron, His Majesty King Hamad, whose continuous support and generosity enabled us to reach this silver jubilee milestone,” says Dr George Cheriyan, AMH Corporate CEO and Chief Medical Officer. Now an important fixture in Bahrain’s sporting calendar, the golf tournament first started in 1997 as a fundraiser when the American Mission Hospital’s work and growth necessitated the construction of a new building in Manama, requiring the purchase of advanced medical and surgical equipment. As a not-for-profit healthcare establishment serving Bahrain since 1902, the hospital has no investors or shareholders who put in capital or who seek dividends from its operations. Hence, there is a need for support not only for the hospital’s infrastructure upgrades but also, especially, for its numerous community-outreach programmes. Col. Khalifa Al Fadala tees off in 1999.

lifestyle Bahrainthismonth.com November 2024 19 “Over 200 community outreach projects were conducted in 2023 and 2024 alone, which included free health check-ups, medical camps, health awareness talks, fee-waivers, some full and some partial for the poor,” says Dr. Cheriyan. “We also offer free consultancies and partially-paid treatments to assist the less-privileged members of the society, who are in need of financial support. We have set up the Zwemer Clinic in Manama to help such patients who cannot pay huge consultancy fees,” he added. The first charity golf event, in 1997, was organised by AMH in association with the American Association of Bahrain. Within three years, it had helped in the construction of a new building and also of an overhead bridge across a busy Isa al Kabeer Road in Manama. It enabled the connecting of two hospital buildings on either sides of the road. Tournaments like these help sustain the operations of the hospital without burdening the patients with high bills. The Island Classic tournament is played under the Florida scramble format. There are two flights, Championship and Premiership, which allows various skill levels of golfers to participate. interview Bahrainthismonth.com 24 November 2024 BLENDING COFFEE AND CULTURE Arte de Café is more than a coffee shop – it’s a creative space where art, family and community come together. Founded by Khalid Shukri, the café blends the richness of European coffee culture with Bahrain’s artistic spirit, offering a cosy haven for people to relax, socialise and immerse themselves in art. The journey of Arte de Café began when the visionary Mr. Shukri came up with a new concept. Inspired by UV artists he met during his travels around the world, he wanted to build something special. “I’ve always been an entrepreneur since I finished school,” he says. “Furthermore, art has been around me since childhood. My father was, and still is, a professional photographer.” This early exposure to art laid the foundation for his dream of creating a space that celebrated artistic expression. The café’s vision wasn’t just about displaying art – it was about creating a place where people could engage with both art and each other. “I wanted to bring creative people together and build a community that values art,” Mr. Shukri explains. “After seeing that the majority of people liked and appreciated my work, it really influenced me.” Arte de Café offers more than just art; it serves an innovative menu featuring infused flavoured coffee – a concept new to the region. “The menu is only at 20 percent right now, but we are gradually expanding it,” says Mr. Shukri. Along with coffee, visitors can enjoy herbal teas, fruity bubble teas, premium matcha and snacks like croissants, cakes, cookies and salads. The café’s menu, like its vision, is always growing. Mr. Shukri’s journey into the coffee industry was sparked by curiosity. After asking: “Where was espresso made?”’ he was led to Italy, where he discovered the Espresso Academy in Florence. There, he learned the intricacies of coffee, from green bean selection and cupping to brewing and latte art. “After visiting Florence, I learned a lot about coffee, both in and out of the course. I learned how it’s part of their culture and how much they value it,” he recalls. His aim was to bring a European, specifically Italian, coffee experience to Bahrain, inspired by his travels across Asia, Europe and Africa. Arte de Café is a family effort. Mr. Shukri’s father, a professional photographer, helps capture the essence of the café’s art, while his sister, a graphic designer, crafted the café’s branding and visuals. His younger sister, passionate about art, adds her own creative touch to the space, and his younger brother, a flight attendant, brings back inspiration from his global travels. Their mother, an exceptional chef, rounds out the family’s contributions with her culinary expertise. “Arte doesn’t feel like a business,” he says. “It feels like home.” The café’s goal is to offer a ‘third place,’ where visitors can relax, socialise and connect with like-minded people. Mr. Shukri reflects on how coffee plays a universal role in bringing people together. “‘It all started when I realised how coffee brings people together, no matter where they are or where they come from. No matter how rich or poor, everyone finds time to get together for a cup of coffee.” Indeed, Arte de Café is more than just a coffee shop – it’s a journey through art, family, and the pursuit of something meaningful. Looking ahead, Mr. Shukri hopes to spend more time with his family and expand Arte globally, spreading the love of art and coffee across the world. scan to watch the video

Bahrainthismonth.com 28 November 2024 DJ Akki’s journey into music actually began with a passion for playing drums during his teenage years, but it wasn’t long before DJing captured his imagination. “I started DJing at the age of 16,” he recalls. “I had my first gig at a premium club in Kochi, India. It was a memorable one; they almost didn’t let me in because I was too young, but they gave me a chance! In fact, DJing became a great way to get myself invited to places I normally couldn’t go to!” Driven by an ambition to constantly improve, DJ Akki threw himself into learning the ropes, attending DJ classes in his native Kochi and making connections with seasoned professionals in the industry. His hands-on learning approach and thirst for knowledge led him to work alongside some of India’s top DJs, and he’s never stopped evolving. “Every month, new music comes out, new equipment gets introduced, and we have to study it all on YouTube or from other professionals,” DJ Akki explains. He credits this continuous learning with keeping his skills sharp and relevant in an ever-changing industry. After establishing a name for himself in India, DJ Akki’s career took him to Bahrain, where he continues to thrive. “I moved to Bahrain after spending some time in Canada, where I also performed,” he says, adding that he has played at some of the most popular venues in Bahrain, including Black Angus Seef and Liv. In addition to his DJ gigs, DJ Akki balances a full-time job in the shipping industry. While some might find this juggling act challenging, he enjoys it. “It’s actually a great balance. I have two incomes and the chance to meet new people and be creative,” he says. DJ Akki is a regular performer at Bollywood Beats at the Juffair Grand Hotel, playing most Thursdays and Fridays, and he appreciates the flexibility this allows him. “We have a WhatsApp group, and if I’m available, I’ll join in. It’s a fun way to stay involved.” DJ Akki’s love for music is rooted in his versatility as a performer. “I consider myself an open-format DJ,” he explains. “Whether it’s Bollywood, techno or house music, I can adjust my set to the crowd’s preferences.” His adaptability has meant that over the years, he has also worked on media shows in India, providing background scores for celebrity shows and interactive events. One of his favourite gigs was working with one of India’s best stunt riding teams, Ghost Ryderz, travelling all around the country with them for four years. Looking ahead, DJ Akki has ambitious plans for the future. He hopes to focus more on techno music, his favourite, and to refine his craft in that specific genre. “There’s a lot of potential for growth in Bahrain,” he says, adding that the country’s expanding entertainment industry could benefit from more music festivals and large-scale events. “We’ve had big acts come through Bahrain, and I think there’s a great space for even more festivals, like the ones happening in Saudi Arabia,” he says. As for his ultimate dream? “My biggest ambition is to attend or even perform at Tomorrowland or Ultra Music Festival,” he says, smiling. Bahrainthismonth.com 30 November 2024 CHRISTIAN CEMETERY CAMPAIGN A recent reception was held to raise funds for the construction of a third Christian cemetery in Bahrain, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to address the need for more burial space for the Christian community. The event, hosted by the Christian Community Cemeteries Committee (CCCC) under the chairmanship of the British Ambassador, HE Alastair Long, took place in the peaceful surroundings of the original Christian cemetery in Manama. The first of its kind in Bahrain, this cemetery dates back to 1901 and has since been surrounded by the development of the bustling city. The need for a new cemetery has grown more pressing in recent years. Bahrain’s second Christian cemetery, located in Salmabad, is quickly nearing full capacity, with only a few months left before all remaining plots are utilised. With approximately 40 Christian burials each year – many of them for expatriates who cannot afford the expense of repatriation – the construction of a third cemetery has become a critical task for the CCCC. The first phase of this new cemetery project has already been completed, thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers, churches and generous donors. This phase included the preparation of the site and raising the ground level by two metres to match the surrounding roads, an essential step given the landscape. The land for the cemetery was generously donated. John Luckie-Downe, head of the Cemetery Working Group, a task force established by the CCCC, explained the historical context and importance of this project. “The first Christian cemetery opened in 1901 outside of Manama, and the second in Salmabad has been in use for many years. However, time is running out, and without the funds to complete the third cemetery, we will face a critical shortage of space for Christian burials,” he said. Mr. Luckie-Downe also emphasised the social significance of the project, stating that it serves as a vital piece of social infrastructure for families experiencing traumatic loss, particularly for those who cannot afford the expense of returning their loved ones to their home countries for burial. “Many of the burials are for lowerincome families, and sadly, a number are for infants. The new cemetery will offer a place of dignity and peace for all Christians, regardless of their denomination or level of religious practice,” he added. The second phase of the project, the construction of a boundary wall, is set to begin soon, with sufficient funds already raised. This phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. However, fundraising efforts are ongoing for the third phase, which will involve the construction of essential facilities, including a guardhouse, WC block, storage area and pathways, along with security features like CCTV. The target amount for this phase is BD59,800, to be raised by the end of 2025. Father Richard Fermer, Dean of St Christopher’s Cathedral, thanked the various churches in Bahrain for their contributions. “This is a work of charity for the common good, and the construction of the new cemetery will provide support to expatriates who cannot afford to return home for burial. It is a truly ecumenical project that benefits the entire community.” Looking ahead, the CCCC has ambitious plans to enhance the new cemetery even further. Plans are in place for the construction of a chapel by 2026, providing a space for final prayers and remembrance. In addition, a modern, low-emission crematorium is also under consideration, which would serve a wider faith community in Bahrain, further cementing the cemetery’s role as an essential piece of social infrastructure. Bahrainthismonth.com 34 November 2024 The History of Pearling in Bahrain For centuries, Bahrain was the epicentre of the world’s pearling industry, producing some of the most prized pearls ever discovered. From ancient times to the modern day, the story of pearling is woven into the fabric of Bahraini society, economy and culture. Edwin D’Souza traces the history of pearling in Bahrain, from its early beginnings and golden age to its eventual decline with the rise of cultured pearls and oil. Despite the industry’s end, Bahrain’s pearling legacy remains a cherished part of its identity. For centuries, the waters surrounding Bahrain were famed for producing some of the finest natural pearls in the world. The history of pearling in Bahrain is not only a testament to the country’s natural wealth but also an essential part of its cultural heritage, influencing its economy, society and even its global identity. Pearling in Bahrain dates back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that pearl diving was practiced as early as 2000BC, making it one of the oldest known industries in the region. The abundance of oysters in the shallow waters of the Arabian Gulf made it an ideal location for pearling, and Bahrain’s geographic position helped it become a centre for this lucrative trade. Historically, Bahrain’s pearls were highly priced for their purity, lustre and rarity. These natural treasures were sought after by royalty and elites across ancient civilisations, from Mesopotamia to the Indian subcontinent and the Mediterranean. The island’s name itself, Bahrain, is derived from the Arabic word bahr, meaning ‘sea,’ reflecting its intimate relationship with the surrounding waters and the pearling industry that flourished within them. With the rise of Islam in the 7th century, Bahrain continued to thrive as a pearling centre. The region’s pearls were celebrated in Islamic culture, where pearls were not only symbols of wealth but also spiritual purity and divine beauty. Pearls are mentioned in the Quran, which further elevated their cultural significance. By the 9th and 10th centuries, Bahrain’s pearling industry was fully integrated into the larger Arabian Gulf economy. Traders from Bahrain exported pearls to markets as far away as India, Persia, and Europe. The city of Basra in present-day Iraq became a major centre for pearling trade during this period, and Bahrain’s pearls were often exported through this vital trade hub. Pearling remained an important part of Bahrain’s economy throughout the Islamic Golden Age, particularly under the rule of the Abbasid Caliphate, which saw flourishing trade across the Middle East and beyond. While Bahrain had other economic activities like agriculture and fishing, it was the pearls that formed the backbone of its wealth and international prestige. The pearling industry was organised into a structured, hierarchical system. At the top were the tawash, or pearl merchants, who financed expeditions and traded pearls. They were wealthy and influential members of society, often playing a key role in the local economy. The merchants would sell pearls both locally and internationally, acting as the link between the divers and the broader global market. The divers, known as ghawwas, formed the backbone of the industry. Their work was perilous, physically demanding, and required immense skill. Equipped with minimal gear, A GLIMPSE INTO AN ANCIENT LEGACY jewellery

Bahrainthismonth.com November 2024 35 including nose clips made from tortoiseshell and finger protectors, these divers would plunge into the depths of the sea, sometimes up to 30 metres, to retrieve oysters from the seabed. They faced numerous dangers, from drowning to encountering dangerous sea creatures, yet they were crucial to the success of the industry. Divers often came from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and despite their critical role, they earned modest wages compared to the merchants. In addition to the divers, each pearling vessel, or sambuk, had a captain known as a nakhuda, as well as a crew that assisted with the ship’s operation. The nakhuda played an important role in managing the diving expeditions, navigating the seas and ensuring that the operations ran smoothly. Pearling trips, known as ghous, typically lasted for several months during the pearling season, from June to September, when the waters were calm, and weather conditions were favourable. The 19th and early 20th centuries are often referred to as the Golden Age of Bahrain’s pearling industry. During this period, Bahrain was one of the world’s leading producers of natural pearls. The British, who had established a protectorate over Bahrain in the early 19th century, helped Bahrain gain access to new markets in Europe and India, further boosting the industry’s prominence. Pearling was the dominant economic activity in Bahrain, employing a significant portion of the population. Entire towns and villages along the coast were sustained by the pearling industry, and the fortunes of many Bahraini families were built upon the trade. The wealth generated by pearling brought not only prosperity to Bahrain but also a rich cultural heritage, reflected in the art, music and traditions of the island. In the early 20th century, European jewellers like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels became major clients of Bahraini pearls, recognising their exceptional quality. These global connections elevated Bahrain’s status as a pearl producer, and its pearls adorned the crowns and jewels of royalty across the world. Despite its longstanding success, Bahrain’s pearling industry began to decline in the early 20th century, largely due to two major factors: the introduction of cultured pearls and the discovery of oil. In the 1920s, Japanese entrepreneur Mikimoto Kōkichi perfected the technique of cultivating pearls in oyster farms, producing pearls that were more affordable and readily available than natural pearls. This revolutionised the global pearl market, leading to a sharp decline in demand for natural pearls. Bahrain’s pearling industry, which had thrived on the exclusivity and rarity of its natural pearls, could not compete with the mass production of cultured pearls from Japan. At the same time, Bahrain discovered oil in 1932, which shifted the focus of the economy away from pearling. The oil industry quickly became the dominant source of revenue for the island, and many former pearl divers and traders transitioned into the oil sector. The discovery of oil brought modernisation and industrialisation to Bahrain, further accelerating the decline of traditional industries like pearling. Though the pearling industry in Bahrain has long since diminished, its legacy continues to influence the country today. The story of Bahrain’s pearling past is preserved through cultural landmarks, museums and UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Pearling Trail, recognised by UNESCO in 2012, offers visitors a glimpse into the island’s pearling history, with sites ranging from traditional diving centres to merchant houses and ancient oyster beds. Pearling remains an integral part of Bahrain’s cultural identity, celebrated in festivals, art and folklore. The pearl continues to symbolise Bahrain’s heritage, representing the island’s connection to the sea and its history of resilience, trade and craftsmanship. Today, while oil has replaced pearls as Bahrain’s main source of wealth, the memory of the pearling era lives on, reminding the world of the island’s rich maritime tradition. jewellery INTERESTING FACT By law, in the Kingdom of Bahrain, you can only sell natural pearls. The importing of cultured pearls is not permitted.
