One of the highlights this month is our special supplement, Germany in Bahrain. The deep-rooted ties between Bahrain and Germany are showcased through interviews and features, with the centrepiece being an exclusive conversation with His Excellency Clemens Hach, the German Ambassador to Bahrain. His insights into the evolving relationship between our two nations are both enlightening and inspiring. This issue also celebrates the long-standing friendship between Bahrain and Türkiye as we speak with Turkish Ambassador, Her Excellency Esin Çakıl. As her tenure in the Kingdom comes to a close, she reflects on her time here, the progress made across various sectors and her hopes for the future, particularly as Türkiye marks its 101st Republic Day. Away from the diplomacy field, we were granted an exclusive and insightful interview with Dr. Hashim S. Hussein, who has led the UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) since its establishment in 1996. In her monthly Commerce op-ed, Pria Masson tackles a topic that many may find difficult but essential – what to do when money management goes wrong. Her piece on financial damage control provides valuable strategies for navigating tricky financial waters and offers practical steps to get back on track. For motoring enthusiasts, Kristian Harrison brings you not one but two reviews this month, with both the Kia Seltos SUV and the Mercedes E-Class saloon having their day in the sun… literally! We also bring you the latest in Motoring News, included the announcement that Bahrain International Circuit will once again host F1’s pre-season test in 2025. As the Kingdom springs back to life, the entertainment scene is buzzing this month, with a host of workshops, events and live performances that are sure to keep your calendars full. Celebrating Diplomatic and Commercial Relations between Germany and Bahrain in Germany Bahrain
Germany in Bahrain Bahrainthismonth.com 16 October 2024 Discussing Diplomacy, Energy & Cultural Exchange Your Excellency, thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Can you tell us about your diplomatic journey to date and how you are finding your stint in Bahrain? Thank you for having me. I’ve been in the diplomatic service for about 25 years. Throughout my career, I’ve had postings in Latin America, East Africa, the United States, and spent significant time at headquarters in Berlin, often working on international crises. For instance, I dealt with Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq when Daesh was threatening these countries. My last assignment before Bahrain was in crisis prevention, peace building, and stabilisation, with a focus on West Africa. I came to Bahrain in 2022, and I am now entering my third year here. Bahrain has been an incredibly welcoming place for me and my family. The island’s culture of hospitality is evident everywhere, making it a truly enchanting experience. Professionally, Bahrain’s diplomacy is impressive, punching above its weight, especially regarding efforts toward peace and reconciliation in the Middle East. This As the German Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Clemens Hach is in his third year of overseeing diplomatic relations between the two countries. With extensive experience in international crises and diplomacy, Ambassador Hach’s tenure in Bahrain is marked by fostering strong bilateral relations, enhancing business ties and promoting cultural exchange. Kristian Harrison sat down with him to discuss his career, the German-Bahraini relationship, and areas of mutual interest with a particular focus on renewable energy, education and trade.
Germany in Bahrain Bahrainthismonth.com October 2024 17 environment has allowed me to build on the strong people-to-people relations between our two countries. Bahrain is a relatively small country, especially compared to regional powerhouses like the UAE and Saudi Arabia. How does Bahrain maintain its strong standing in global diplomacy? Bahrain’s strength lies in its principled and moderate stance, coupled with moral authority and leadership that has earned it credibility in diplomatic circles. Despite its size, Bahrain’s leadership makes bold decisions that contribute to peace and stability in the region. The country’s ability to maintain a balanced, pragmatic approach has solidified its role as a key player in Middle Eastern diplomacy. What are the main areas of cooperation between Germany and Bahrain, particularly in business and the economy? While Bahrain is a relatively small market, it offers a business-friendly environment with excellent regional connectivity. This has attracted several German companies, such as DHL, which has its regional headquarters here, and Hannover Re, one of the leading global reinsurers and a major player in Islamic reinsurance. German petrochemical giant BASF has a production facility in Bahrain and we also see engagement from smaller firms in the industry. Beyond individual companies, strong ties between German and Bahraini businesses have developed through decades of partnerships, particularly within family-owned businesses. This cooperation strengthens our bilateral relations and creates lasting economic links. Germany is known for its world leadership in renewable energy. How are you working with Bahrain on sustainability and renewable energy projects? Germany has been at the forefront of renewable energy, and we’re eager to share our expertise with Bahrain as it pursues ambitious environmental goals, like net-zero carbon emissions by midcentury. We’ve collaborated on several initiatives, including a partnership between the German Technical Cooperation and Bahrain’s Supreme Council for Environment to establish environmental baselines. On the technology side, the Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany are working with the University of Bahrain on solar panels adapted for hot climates. The research aims to improve the efficiency of solar panels in high temperatures, a significant challenge here in Bahrain. At the embassy, we’ve also installed solar panels in partnership with a Bahraini company, reducing our electricity consumption by about 20 percent. Cultural exchange is another important part of diplomacy. What is the German Embassy doing to promote German culture in Bahrain? This year, we are organising ‘German Weeks’ in Bahrain, starting with the Oktoberfest at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, Manama, and a German jazz concert at the Cultural Hall, coinciding with the Day of German Unity on October 3. Additionally, the big band of the German Armed Forces will perform on October 9, showcasing jazz, swing and even pop. We’re also partnering with Alosra to showcase German food products. On a broader level, we contribute to cultural events such as the Spring of Culture and the International Music Festival, regularly bringing German music and art to Bahrain. These efforts help deepen the cultural ties between our two nations. What can you tell us about the German community in Bahrain? The German community in Bahrain is relatively small, with about 400 citizens, including those working in Saudi Arabia but living here. Many work at Bahraini or German businesses, and there is also a significant presence of German doctors. One of the most exciting developments has been the reactivation of the Bahraini-German Friendship Association, which promotes cultural and people-to-people exchanges. The association will also soon offer German language courses, further strengthening ties. Germany is a popular destination for Bahrainis, both for tourism and education. What is the embassy doing to promote these sectors? Germany remains a top destination for Bahrainis, especially for medical tourism and leisure travel, with Bavaria being particularly popular. Gulf Air now offers direct flights to both Munich and Frankfurt, making travel more convenient. Bavaria, with its mountains, lakes and castles, is a fantastic gateway to Europe. In terms of education, Germany offers highquality, affordable education, with many courses available in English. Tuition fees are minimal, around EUR300 to EUR400 per semester, making it one of the most cost-effective places to study in Europe. We are working with the Bahraini-German Friendship Association to resume German language courses, which will open up further educational opportunities for Bahrainis. Looking ahead, what goals do you hope to achieve during the remainder of your tenure? One of my main goals is to strengthen people-to-people relations. The BahrainiGerman Friendship Association is a significant step in this direction, and I will continue to support its growth. Economically, we are exploring the creation of a European Chamber of Commerce to further promote business ties, not just between Germany and Bahrain, but with all of Europe. On the political front, I am pleased with the strong relations we’ve built between senior officials in our two governments. I hope to facilitate more high-level visits from Germany to Bahrain during my remaining time here, further cementing our diplomatic ties. Finally, is there a message you’d like to share with the German community in Bahrain? I’d like to thank the German community for being ambassadors of Germany here in Bahrain. Your contributions to Bahrain’s development and your role in fostering German-Bahraini relations are invaluable. I look forward to continuing to work with you to further strengthen the friendship between our two countries. Scan to watch the full interview

Germany in Bahrain Bahrainthismonth.com October 2024 19 RAISING SANITATION STANDARDS Founded in 1962, Abdulaziz Hamad Al Saleh Company has grown from a modest trading enterprise into one of Bahrain’s leading suppliers of sanitary ware and plumbing products. With a long history of providing quality goods and services, the company has played a crucial role in Bahrain’s development, offering top-tier products for both the private and public sectors. Initially focusing on the food and beverage sector, the company strategically shifted to importing infrastructure pipes and plumbing fittings to meet the Kingdom’s evolving needs. This decision marked a turning point, as Abdulaziz Hamad Al Saleh Company became the first in Bahrain to introduce Australianmade copper pipes and PVC plumbing fittings to the market. One of the company’s key strengths is its partnerships with German manufacturers. Since the 1980s, it has cultivated a reputation as a trustworthy local partner, importing high-quality products from Germany, Australia and the UK. German brands, in particular, have become a cornerstone of the company’s offerings, known for their advanced technology, stringent quality controls and innovative products. The company’s dedication to quality goes beyond mere imports. Abdulaziz Hamad Al Saleh Company ensures each product meets local standards through meticulous due diligence, including factory visits, technical evaluations and adherence to Bahrain’s governmental regulations. Looking ahead, Abdulaziz Hamad Al Saleh Company aims to introduce new German brands to the Bahraini market while maintaining its reputation for excellence. The company’s vision is to maintain sustainability by continuously serving the Bahrain Market and contributing to neighbouring markets such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar. www.alsalehgroupbh.com
Scan to watch the video When it comes to the Mercedes E-Class, you know you’re stepping into a vehicle that oozes sophistication and style, but don’t be fooled – beneath all that luxury lies some serious engineering power… and an opportunity to have fun. Kristian Harrison drove the latest model in Bahrain and offers his thoughts. The E-Class I had the pleasure of testing was the E 200 Sedan, sporting a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine. This may sound modest, but with 204 horsepower on tap and a 0-100 km/h sprint of 7.5 seconds, it feels anything but tame. Pair this with a maximum speed of 240 km/h, and you’ve got a machine that doesn’t just glide – it surges. The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is a smooth operator, delivering gear changes as if it’s been practicing yoga – calm, fluid, and never in a rush, unless you command it by pushing the settings to ‘Sport’. Driving through Bahrain has never felt more comfortable. Regional specification ensures that this car is more than ready for the heat, with the most radical air conditioning system I’ve ever seen. With a few presses of the touchscreen (more on that later) you can select a number of options (head, body, feet, etc.) or customise your own, and the car’s array of vents will automatically adjust by themselves. Genius! No more awkward reaching across the car whilst driving to rearrange them! As for the suspension, the AVANTGARDE setup combined with an AMG sports package means a ride that balances comfort and agility beautifully. No more booking in for a back massage every time I navigate the speed bump hellscape of Saar! The E-Class is packed with tech that feels borderline futuristic. The MBUX Superscreen is the standout feature here – a staggering achievement that stretches from behind the steering wheel all the way to the passenger store with three distinct sections: the driver cluster with the usual barrage of gauges, shortcuts and controls; the main 12.3-inch central display where the car’s extensive range of infotainment and smartphone integration options are handled, and the OLED front passenger screen where one can amuse themselves with music, games and more. There’s even a selfie and video camera perched on top of the dashboard – perfect for capturing those family days out without running the risk of a fine for using your phone or worse. No stones are left unturned with the rest of the interior, with ARTICO man-made leather seats, a panoramic sliding sunroof, black piano lacquer trim and brown open-pore maple wood accents that provide an elegant contrast. The car also features active ambient lighting with 64 colours, which is perfect for those moments when you want to feel like you’re driving in your own private lounge – because why not? As with any Mercedes, safety is at the forefront. Blind Spot Assist, Active Parking Assist with Parktronic, and Collision Prevention Assist Plus are just a few of the features that ensure you stay safe no matter where the road takes you. The Mercedes E-Class is the perfect blend of style, technology and performance. It glides effortlessly over smooth highways while still offering enough power to make the drive exciting. Not only that, but it’s packed with so much tech that it never lets you forget what driving should be: fun. Bahrainthismonth.com 24 October 2024 Leading the Way in As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, Germany is leading the way in sustainable travel through innovative initiatives that protect ecosystems, reduce carbon emissions and enrich local communities. Edwin D’Souza shares how Germany’s commitment to eco-conscious tourism is shaping the future of travel and inspiring adventurers to prioritise sustainability. As global tourism expands, the industry is under increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices that mitigate environmental concerns, such as carbon emissions, ecosystem degradation and overtourism. Germany is at the forefront of sustainable tourism, showcasing a variety of initiatives aimed at protecting natural and cultural heritage while encouraging tourism growth. Through these efforts, Germany is setting a global example of how to balance tourism with ecological and cultural sustainability. Germany’s sustainable travel framework focuses on minimising the environmental impact of tourism by promoting eco-friendly accommodations, responsible travel practices and the preservation of local ecosystems and cultural heritage. It encourages travellers to make conscious choices throughout their journey — from selecting green transportation and lodging to participating in low-impact activities. This not only conserves biodiversity and reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also helps sustain local communities and preserve cultural traditions. Eco-Tourism NATURAL WONDERS Germany’s national parks and nature reserves, including the Bavarian Forest National Park, are dedicated to promoting biodiversity and protecting ecosystems while allowing visitors to experience nature in a responsible manner. The country boasts 16 national parks and numerous nature reserves, many of which provide educational programmes, guided wildlife tours and sustainable accommodations. These initiatives not only allow visitors to connect with nature but also ensure that tourism does not come at the expense of environmental degradation. Here are some of the key factors that make Germany a leader when it comes to eco-tourism: Germany in Bahrain
Germany in Bahrain Bahrainthismonth.com October 2024 25 CARBON-CONSCIOUS COMMUTING Germany has long been a pioneer in sustainability, from reducing carbon emissions to developing efficient public transportation systems. Its comprehensive tourism policies have earned it recognition as one of the top sustainable travel destinations globally, making it a model for eco-conscious travel. One of the cornerstones of Germany’s approach to sustainable tourism is its commitment to green mobility. Deutsche Bahn (DB), the national railway company, leads this charge by operating trains powered by renewable energy, providing travellers with an eco-friendly alternative to cars and planes. Germany’s extensive and efficient rail network connects cities and rural areas, reducing the environmental impact of travel while offering an accessible way to explore the country’s diverse landscapes. Urban centers such as Berlin, Munich and Hamburg also support sustainability by providing bike-sharing programmes, electric vehicle rentals and well-integrated public transportation networks, all designed to lower emissions and promote green travel. ECO-FRIENDLY ACCOMODATIONS Another vital aspect of Germany’s sustainable tourism offering is its focus on eco-friendly accommodations. Certified by organisations such as Green Key, EU Ecolabel and Bio Hotels, these establishments prioritise energy efficiency, water conservation and waste reduction, while offering guests a comfortable stay. They emphasise the use of locally-sourced organic food and operate with minimal environmental impact. Regions like Bavaria and the Black Forest are home to ecolodges and farm stays where visitors can engage in sustainable practices, such as organic farming and wildlife conservation, making their trips both immersive and eco-conscious. ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY URBAN SPACES Sustainable urban tourism is another key area of focus for Germany. Cities like Freiburg, often dubbed Germany’s greenest city, stand as testaments to sustainable urban planning, with pedestrian-friendly zones, green spaces and energy-efficient buildings. Cultural preservation plays a central role in Germany’s tourism strategy as well, with a strong emphasis on heritage tourism that supports local artisans, businesses, and cultural sites, ensuring that the country’s rich history is both shared and safeguarded. Germany’s efforts in sustainable tourism illustrate how eco-conscious travel can be both enjoyable and impactful. Visitors to the country can indulge in its scenic landscapes, dynamic cities, and cultural heritage while actively participating in responsible tourism. Whether opting for green mobility, staying at eco-friendly accommodations, or engaging in low-impact tourism activities, travellers contribute to the long-term preservation of Germany’s natural and cultural treasures. As the urgency of climate change and environmental conservation intensifies, sustainable tourism is no longer just an option — it is essential for the future of travel. Germany’s approach demonstrates how countries can safeguard their environment and cultural heritage while continuing to welcome visitors. By following Germany’s lead, travellers can inspire a global shift toward more sustainable travel choices, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the world’s beauty and diversity.
Celebrating the 101st anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye As her tenure in the Kingdom comes to a close, Turkish Ambassador to Bahrain, Her Excellency Esin Çakıl, reflects on her time on the island, the progress made in various sectors and her hopes for the future. In this wide-ranging interview with Kristian Harrison, she discusses the successful diplomatic relations between Bahrain and Türkiye, the future of bilateral ties and her personal experiences representing her country. Bahrainthismonth.com 26 October 2024 interview
Bahrainthismonth.com October 2024 27 Your Excellency, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Could you tell us about your diplomatic career journey so far? I have been serving as the Turkish Ambassador in Bahrain, where I have always been welcomed with the warmest of feelings, for almost four years. As my tenure in Bahrain comes to an end, I would like to thank Bahrain This Month for its continuous support throughout my time here and for giving me one last opportunity to share my thoughts. There is a well-known saying that being a diplomat is not just a career path, it is also a lifestyle. You are far from home, but you are stepping into the dynamic and exciting world of international relations and contributing to the shaping of your country’s foreign policy. I also feel lucky to serve in Senegal, Lebanon, the Netherlands and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Among them, the TRNC has a distinguished place for me since I become a part of the immense efforts given by Türkiye to sisterly TRNC in all fields for their international visibility. During my career, I have accumulated a comprehensive portfolio ranging from Türkiye’s relations with NATO to energy policies and consular affairs. What is the current state of relations between Bahrain and Türkiye? What are the main areas of cooperation? Türkiye and Bahrain are two friendly countries bound together by deep-rooted historical, cultural, religious and socio-economic ties. Bilateral relations continue to thrive at an excellent level in all areas. Last year, we celebrated the Golden Jubilee of our diplomatic ties, a milestone that reflects the strength of our political, economic and cultural connections. Over the past 50 years, our relations have significantly advanced across a wide range of sectors, including political sphere, tourism, trade, investment, healthcare, defence, education, energy and culture. As one of the most recent developments that demonstrate our strong cooperation, we were proud to reassume the command of multinational counter-piracy task force CTF151, based in Bahrain, in July. I believe there is immense potential for cooperation, particularly in areas such as youth affairs, investment and education. The relationship between Türkiye and Bahrain will continue to steadily grow and strengthen. Are there any large-scale projects or high-level delegations planned for the near future? The official visit of H.E. Prof. Dr. Numan Kurtulmuş, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, to Bahrain earlier this year played a significant role in advancing our bilateral relations. There is a close contact between many of our institutions, and I hope that such visits will continue to increase in the coming period. In the near future, we will focus on the areas of economy, trade and investment. Delegations from the Investment Office of the Presidency of Türkiye and Foreign Economic Relations Board are set to visit Bahrain, where they will meet with representatives from the Kingdom’s public and private sectors in cooperation with the Bahrain Economic Development Board. Also, the 8th meeting of the Joint Economic Committee between Türkiye and Bahrain, co-chaired by the Minister of Treasury and Finance of Türkiye and Minister of Finance and National Economy of Bahrain, will be held in Türkiye soon. Turning to projects, over the past 20 years Turkish constructors successfully completed large scale operations in Bahrain. Among these were the extension of the Bahrain International Airport by TAV and the ALBA Line 6 expansion project by GAMA. Furthermore, last year, GETAS assumed the biggest solar panel project in the Kingdom. Türkiye is one of the main tourist destinations for Bahrainis. What are the most popular places they like to visit? Türkiye is a rare country where the influences of Asia, Europe and the Middle East are uniquely blended. Whether it’s the stunning beaches of Antalya and Bodrum, boundless valleys and rock carvings of Cappadocia or calming greenery of Bursa and Sapanca, Türkiye boasts a wealth of natural and cultural wonders. With its historic landmarks, quintessential cuisine, festivals of art, celebration of faith and its famous cats, Istanbul is among the most visited cities by Bahrainis. Trabzon and Rize, located in the Black Sea coast, with their breathtaking mountains, are also among the most popular destinations. As one of the world’s largest tourism destinations, Türkiye hosted almost 65,000 Bahrainis in 2023. After the visa exemption given to Bahraini citizens, I am sure that Türkiye will continue being the first tourism destination for Bahrainis. What is the Embassy doing to promote Turkish culture in Bahrain? I feel fortunate to serve in a country that holds such a deep appreciation for Turkish culture. I am grateful for the sympathy and interest of Bahraini people towards Turkish culture, cuisine, language and even TV series. As the Embassy, we support all initiatives that aim to further raise that awareness. For instance, for the last three years we have facilitated a youth exchange programme, between Denizli Youth Centre and the Good Word Society of Bahrain. Yunus Emre Cultural Centre has been giving Turkish language courses at the University of Bahrain for seven years. We occasionally meet with participants of the exchange programme and Turkish learners in Bahrain to listen their experiences and thoughts. We also actively use social media, one the most important dialogue channels of our age, to promote Türkiye’s deep-rooted and vibrant culture. How many Turkish citizens currently reside in Bahrain, and what sectors are they involved in? There are around 2,000 Turkish citizens currently residing in Bahrain, and they have become esteemed and integral members of Bahraini society. Turkish expatriates contribute significantly across various sectors, including healthcare, engineering, academia, arts, skilled craftsmanship and business. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Turkish community in Bahrain for representing Türkiye in such a remarkable way. As Republic Day approaches on October 29, what message would you like to convey to the Turkish community in Bahrain? First of all, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Turkish community for the unwavering support they have shown to me and my colleagues at the Embassy, and making me proud with their presence and success during my tenure here. I believe that we might broaden the definition of ‘home’ to encompass not just one’s physical location but also one’s nation of origin and emotional attachment. Therefore, Bahrain is now the second home of the Turkish community, who are only physically distant from Türkiye. With these feelings, I sincerely congratulate Turkish citizens residing in Bahrain on the 101st anniversary of our Republic. I hope that our citizens will carry the same joy and happiness in their hearts throughout their lives as felt on the first day of the establishment of our great Republic. interview
