Bahrain’s Heritage Reimagined

Amna Syed sits down with Hani Sadek, General Manager of Al Sedra, to explore the restaurant’s Folklore Nights – a luxurious celebration of Bahraini heritage and culinary artistry in the heart of Muharraq.
In the historic heart of Muharraq, Bahrain’s first capital city, and mere steps from the UNESCO listed Pearling Path Visitor Centre, Al Sedra Restaurant has quietly become a beacon of culture, cuisine and artistry. Under the sprawling branches of an ancient Sedra tree, the venue transforms nightly into a living celebration of Bahraini heritage, where music, storytelling and gastronomy converge in a sophisticated, contemporary setting.
Hani Sadek, General Manager of Al Sedra, describes the vision behind this modern revival. “Al Sedra has been part of Muharraq for over 25 years,” he explains, “but we wanted to reimagine it as a destination where tradition meets luxury and every detail is purposeful from the décor to the food to the experiences we offer our guests.”
Adjacent to The Art Station, a vibrant creative hub where Bahrain’s emerging artists, musicians and filmmakers showcase their talents, Al Sedra has become an extension of the island’s artistic heartbeat. Every element – the furnishings, the lighting and the subtle touches of artistry is designed to immerse guests in a space that feels simultaneously timeless and modern.
The restaurant’s namesake, the Sedra tree, embodies endurance, wisdom and rootedness. “It inspired everything we do here,” Mr. Sadek says. “It reminds us that heritage is living. Each Folklore Show is a continuation of that legacy, under its branches.”
Central to this reimagined concept is the Folklore Show, held every Thursday and Friday from 8pm onwards. Under the direction of acclaimed Bahraini actor and director Jamaan Alrowaiei, Al Sedra Folklore Show is a 90-minute tapestry of music, dance and theatre, celebrating the island’s rich cultural traditions. Traditional instruments mingle with contemporary choreography, while subtle surprises – from miniature fashion showcases of traditional abayas to short theatrical vignettes make every evening unique.
“Guests are not mere spectators,” Mr. Sadek notes. “They are part of the story, moving through heritage, music and emotion.”
The culinary journey is equally immersive. Special set menus, priced at BD18, combine traditional Bahraini favourites such as Machboos, Nashef Laham and Balaleet with modern international dishes, including delicately-plated pasta and artistic sushi rolls. “Each dish tells a story and complements the performance,” Mr. Sadek says. “It’s about engaging all the senses – taste, sight and emotion.” The courtyard has been meticulously designed to offer intimacy and spectacle. The ‘Stage View’ area, accommodating around 100 guests, provides a front-row experience, while screens in the ‘Non-Stage View’ section ensure every guest enjoys the performance. Lanterns, soft lighting and the gentle evening breeze from the Gulf create a sense of understated luxury, making the experience both refined and inviting. Looking ahead, Al Sedra plans to extend its cultural programme year-round, with intimate musical evenings, traditional performances and special Ramadan events featuring lavish Iftar and Ghabga spreads accompanied by continuous live entertainment. The kitchen team, led by a new executive chef, reflects Bahrain’s cosmopolitan spirit while honouring the island’s culinary traditions. Al Sedra Folklore Show is more than a dinner or a performance; it is a sensorial celebration of Bahrain’s past and present.
In the historic corridors of Muharraq, along the Pearling Path once trodden by generations of pearl divers, Al Sedra invites guests to slow down, savour authentic flavours and experience heritage in a way that is immersive, elegant and unforgettable.
Reserve your seat for Folklore Nights at Al Sedra in Muharraq. BD18 set menus, Thursday and Friday from 8pm by the Pearling Path Visitor Centre.
