Confidence in Continuity

Dr. Nehal El Naggar, Associate Professor at the Royal University for Women, reflects on the role of education in sustaining resilience and continuity in Bahrain during uncertain times.

Education has long shaped Bahrain’s identity, not simply as a system of learning but as a foundation for national continuity. As one of the first countries in the Gulf to establish formal education for boys in 1919 and for girls in 1928, the Kingdom positioned knowledge at the centre of its development. That legacy continues to influence how individuals engage with the nation today, fostering a shared sense of responsibility among both citizens and residents.

This foundation is closely tied to leadership and collective effort. The progress of Bahrain’s education sector reflects long-term vision, supported by institutions and individuals who contribute to its stability. It also exists alongside a wider national framework that prioritises security and continuity, upheld by those who serve to protect the Kingdom.

Within this context, universities are operating with a clearly defined role. At the Royal University for Women, the academic year continues alongside preparations for the next intake, with a focus on ensuring that access to education remains uninterrupted. This reflects a commitment to preparing students for an increasingly uncertain environment.

The role of education is therefore shifting. Classrooms are no longer defined solely by academic delivery. They are also environments where structure is maintained. For students, they offer familiarity at a time when external conditions may feel unpredictable.

Educators are also taking on wider responsibilities. Teaching now extends beyond subject matter to include emotional awareness and support. There is a growing emphasis on psychosocial wellbeing, ensuring that students are equipped to process and respond to change.

This approach is reflected in the promotion of values. Citizenship, responsibility and social cohesion are integrated into the student experience, shaping how individuals understand their role within society. Alongside this, there is a continued focus on cultivating a culture of peace, where dialogue and respect are actively practised.

Maintaining continuity in learning remains essential. Disruption to education carries wider implications, affecting both academic progress and social stability. Ensuring that learning continues without interruption reinforces confidence across the community.
These efforts extend beyond the academic calendar. They contribute to safeguarding the social fabric of the Kingdom and strengthening the resilience of future generations.

As Bahrain moves through a period shaped by regional complexity, education continues to provide consistency. It supports students in navigating uncertainty while reinforcing the values that underpin the Kingdom’s long-term development
