Nurturing Health, Inspiring Success

Adv. Binu Mannil Varughese, Honorary Chairman of The Indian School Bahrain, writes on why student wellbeing, healthy habits and a balanced educational environment are central to lasting success and development.

On the occasion of World Health Day, I extend my warm greetings to our students, parents, teachers and the wider community in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Health is not merely the absence of illness; it is the foundation upon which meaningful learning and holistic development are built. At our institution, we firmly believe that a healthy child is better equipped to learn, grow and contribute positively to society. It is with this conviction that we continue to place wellbeing at the heart of our educational philosophy.

As an institution affiliated with UNESCO, The Indian School Bahrain is committed to providing total quality education at an affordable cost while nurturing globally minded, ethical and responsible individuals. Our approach goes beyond academics. We strive to instil humane values, emotional resilience and a balanced lifestyle – qualities that are essential for facing the challenges of an ever-evolving world.

In recent years, we have taken significant steps to strengthen both the physical and mental wellbeing of our students. The introduction of smart classrooms across our campuses has transformed the learning experience, making it more engaging, interactive and student-centred.

At the same time, the installation of comprehensive safety systems, including advanced CCTV networks, ensures a secure environment where students can thrive with confidence.

Understanding that wellbeing encompasses emotional health as much as physical fitness, we have established a dedicated counselling department. Our trained professionals provide guidance on academic choices, career pathways and personal challenges, ensuring that every student receives the support they need. In addition, our nursing unit remains vigilant in promoting health awareness and addressing immediate medical needs within the school.

We are equally proud of our Nature Club, guided by the vision ‘Green ISB, Green Bahrain’. Through activities such as gardening, environmental campaigns and field visits, our students develop a deep respect for nature and an understanding of sustainable living. These initiatives not only enhance environmental awareness but also contribute to a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

Our Physical Education Department plays a vital role in promoting fitness, discipline and teamwork. Through structured sports programmes, regular training and inter-house competitions, students develop endurance, coordination and sportsmanship. The department encourages active participation, helping students build healthy habits, confidence and resilience that extend far beyond the playing field.

This World Health Day, we reaffirm a simple yet powerful belief: health is the foundation of every achievement. Every great mind thrives in a healthy body and education truly begins with wellbeing. By promoting physical vitality and mental resilience, we aim to shape individuals who are not only academically accomplished but also emotionally strong and socially responsible.

I urge our students to adopt healthy habits in their daily lives – balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate rest and mindful use of technology. To our parents, I express my sincere gratitude for your continued support in reinforcing these values at home. Together, we can create an environment where our children learn to value health as their greatest wealth. As we observe this important day, let us renew our collective commitment to fostering a culture of wellness within our school and beyond. Let us work together to build a future rooted in balance, awareness and responsible choices. I wish you all good health, happiness and continued success.
