Don’t Turn a Blind Eye! When there is something wrong, there is a responsibility to act!

In his monthly series for Bahrain This Month, Bill Grieve casts his civic lens on areas of concern, offering an enlightening and engaging perspective on various issues affecting life in the Kingdom.

In every society, silence in the face of wrongdoing becomes a silent endorsement of that wrongdoing. People see corruption, incompetence, dangerous behaviour and social problems daily. Some shrug their shoulders, whisper in private circles and move on looking the other way, enabling the rot to spread deeper. The truth is, when people with authority, influence or even just the courage to speak up fail to act, the damage goes far beyond one bad driver or one corrupt manager. It becomes a culture where wrongdoing thrives.

The Dangerous Roads We Share in Bahrain

The Dangerous Roads We Share.
Anyone who drives knows the reality: reckless drivers speeding through traffic lights, tailgating or using their phones while driving. Fatal accidents are reported almost every day, yet too many witnesses remain silent. Reporting dangerous driving is not about ‘interfering in someone else’s life’ – it is about protecting innocent lives at risk on our roads. If someone sees a dangerous driver but says nothing, and that driver kills a pedestrian, is silence not a form of complicity? Civic responsibility starts with small acts and reporting dangerous driving is one of them. But there is more to do: reporting a hole in the road, a displaced manhole cover, a dangerous object lying in the road or poor street lighting is the duty, obligation and responsibility of all road users.

Anti-corruption awareness in Bahrain

Incompetence in Authority.
A common frustration is the appointment of friends, family members or loyal followers into senior management positions regardless of their ability or qualifications. It happens in businesses, real estate owner associations and even within public offices. The result is predictable: confusion, friction, loss of productivity, inefficiency, incompetence and a ‘me-first’ attitude. A residential building owners’ association led by inept individuals can neglect basic building safety or maintenance, endangering occupants. A company or organisation led by incompetent management bleeds talent and resources and wrecks opportunities. When those in power cover up for them instead of holding them accountable, the entire organisation suffers.

When Real Estate Turns into a Nightmare.
The real estate sector is an essential part of any economy, often plagued by corruption, incompetence and mismanagement. Unscrupulous real estate agents mislead buyers about property values, hidden defects or future development plans. Some owners’ associations act more like private clubs for the few at the top, neglecting the very residents they are supposed to serve. Others engage in shady financial practices, diverting or pocketing money that should be used for building upkeep. Reporting such corruption is not only a legal responsibility – it is a moral one. Families invest their savings into these properties; their dreams should not be stolen by dishonest individuals or companies and their peace should not be shattered by incompetent building management who are corrupt through their own inaction, ineptitude and neglect of their duties, responsibilities and obligations such as enforcing bylaws.

Corporate Wrongdoing: Beyond Profit and Loss.

Corporate Wrongdoing: Beyond Profit and Loss.
Inside many companies, employees whisper about bosses who misuse company funds, managers who steal credit for others’ work or directors who enrich themselves at the expense of shareholders and staff. Corruption in the corporate world is not just about lost profits; it damages employee morale, erodes trust and creates toxic work cultures where honesty and hard work are punished. When employees remain silent out of fear, wrongdoers only grow bolder. Whistleblowing is never easy, but it is often the only way to cleanse organisations of the rot that destroys them from within.

Reporting wrongdoing and promoting integrity

The Role of Government Accountability.
Government agencies too are not immune from criticism. Whether it is a licensing officer taking bribes to ‘speed up’ paperwork or a regulatory authority turning a blind eye to obvious violations, public trust erodes when government institutions fail to act. Citizens, residents and businesses pay taxes and obey laws with the expectation that their leaders and regulators will protect their interests, not exploit them. Reporting corruption within government is not an attack on the state – it is a defence of it. Only by exposing wrongdoing can institutions regain credibility and ensure justice for all. Situations of incompetence and corruption are worsened when authorities and regulators are not appropriately enabled or do not rigorously carry out law enforcement, complaint investigations and reported issue follow ups.

The Moral Cost of Silence.

The Moral Cost of Silence.
Some say: “Why get involved? It’s not my problem.” But in truth, every instance of cheating, stealing and lying that goes unchallenged has a cost. It means fewer safe roads, higher property risks, lower company productivity and weaker government institutions. Most importantly, it shapes the next generation. When children see adults tolerate dishonesty, they learn that integrity is optional. When young employees see corrupt managers thrive, they learn that hard work is irrelevant. The cost of silence is measured in broken values as much as broken systems.

Courage in Everyday Acts in Bahrain

Courage in Everyday Acts.
We may not all hold positions of great power or authority, but we each have a role to play. Reporting a reckless driver, questioning a suspicious transaction in a company, refusing to pay a bribe, challenging incompetent leadership and reporting perceived dangers and problems – these are everyday acts of courage. History shows that ineptitude, incompetence and corruption thrive when good people do nothing. But history also shows that societies change when ordinary people take responsibility and lay down challenges to these.

The Call for Collective Responsibility Accountability in Bahain

The Call for Collective Responsibility Accountability.
The fight against corruption, incompetence, ineptitude and wrongdoing is not just a responsibility or legal duty; it is a moral, civic and social obligation. All communities are stronger when individuals, regulators and authorities act with integrity and hold others accountable. Turning a blind eye may feel safer in the moment, but it ultimately endangers everyone. It is time for every citizen, every worker, every manager and every official to accept their role in safeguarding society.

Wrongdoing in Bahrain

Wrongdoing.
Whether on the roads, in real estate, in business, at home, in families or within government wrongdoing– does not disappear when ignored. It grows, spreads and destroys. Silence may protect us for a day, but courage protects us for a lifetime. To truly serve our families, our communities and our country, we must stop turning a blind eye. Speak up. Report. Act. Because when we take responsibility, we help create the living environment and society we all deserve – safe, fair and just.
