Major Road Upgrade

Work has begun on a major, multi-million-dinar expansion of the Shaikh Zayed Highway, with the first phase running from December 16 Highway to Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway and from the western roundabout of A’ali to Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway.

Scheduled to take two years, once completed the BD23.4 million expansion, which is being financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, will increase the highway’s capacity to 80,000 vehicles per day, with a peak-hour capacity of 6,000, according to the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry.

As well as expanding the highway to three lanes in each direction, four roundabouts will be converted into intersections with traffic lights. Lighting, signage, drainage and landscaping will also be upgraded.

The first work got underway on December 16 Highway with the closure of one lane in both directions between Muharraq Avenue and Al Esteqlal Highway.
