Brunch Debut | Al Safir Hotel & Tower

Liz O’Reilly visited this new launch for a happy surprise.

When I heard that Al Safir’s new Friday brunch was taking place in the Apollo Club Lounge, I was slightly concerned at the prospect of loud music and a dark, crowded feeling.

I need not have worried. Making full use of the glass wall overlooking the swimming pool area, where a shawarma station had been set up, the management had created a light-filled but still intimate space – ideal for either a date lunch or a family get-together. And the music, a mix of classical and jazz, took a back seat to our lively conversation.

The array of food on offer was mouthwateringly good — a bread station complete with home baked rolls, Danish pastries and doughnuts; a live omelette station; various different pastas, all cooked to your liking in front of you; an extensive selection of  shellfish, sashimi, tataki and loads of salad options.

The mains, too, offered a huge variety, including laksa, chicken tikka masala, shish tawook, roast beef and many more.

Some of the standouts for me were a salad dish of beetroot with orange segments – an unexpected flavour mix that combined perfectly – and apple chaat – sliced apple lightly sprinkled with chaat spices, again surprising but no less satisfying.

For my main course I chose grilled fish but I couldn’t resist adding a liberal helping of shish tawook. It’s one of my all-time favourite dishes and the Al Safir version did not disappoint ,offering juicy chunks of tender chicken, seasoned to perfection.

My companion does not eat meat and staff were quick to suggest various veggie and fish alternatives. But, to be honest, I think she was saving her appetite for the dessert section. A little of virtually everything found its way onto her plate and I can honestly say I have never seen this woman either so smiley or so quiet!
A definite hit; I will be back.
