Record Drugs Bust

A British Navy warship, HMS Dragon, which is part of the Bahrain-based Combined Task Force, made a record-breaking seizure of 2,540kg of hashish from a dhow in the Arabian Sea.

The drugs stash had been hidden in fishing nets and beneath the engine and this eighth seizure for the Type 45 destroyer gives it the record for the highest number of drugs busts, worth a total of more than BD72 million.

HMS Dragon is part of operations aimed clamping down on terrorist organisations and others using sea routes for smuggling illicit cargo including narcotics, UN-embargoed weapons and Somali charcoal.

A Royal Navy statement said: “Flying a routine dawn mission, the crew of the ship’s Wildcat helicopter spotted a suspicious-looking boat from the air.

“HMS Dragon, which was beginning her journey back to the UK, immediately altered course to intercept the vessel.”
