Saudi in Bahrain

Few relationships in the Gulf are as deeply rooted as that between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Long before modern borders were established, the people of the two kingdoms were connected through family ties, trade, faith and a shared Arabian heritage. Those bonds have continued to shape a partnership built on trust, mutual support and a common vision for regional stability and prosperity.

Formal diplomatic relations have strengthened this historic closeness, with both nations working together across political, economic and security matters. As founding members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have long championed greater regional unity, while their leaders have consistently reaffirmed the importance of cooperation in addressing shared opportunities and challenges.

The opening of the King Fahd Causeway in 1986 transformed the relationship further, creating a permanent physical link between the two countries. It has since become one of the Gulf’s most important gateways, carrying millions of travellers and supporting tourism, commerce and cultural exchange. For Bahrain, Saudi Arabia remains an essential economic partner and a major source of visitors, investment and business activity. At the same time, Bahrain offers Saudi residents and companies a neighbouring market with deep cultural familiarity and strong commercial connections.

Today, the partnership extends across finance, energy, infrastructure, tourism, education and the arts. Ambitious joint initiatives and closer institutional ties are opening new possibilities, reflecting the determination of both kingdoms to build on their shared past while preparing for the future.

In this special Saudi in Bahrain feature, we explore the people, organisations and ideas strengthening this enduring relationship. Through interviews, business insights and cultural stories, we highlight the many ways Saudi Arabia contributes to life in Bahrain and examine how collaboration between the two kingdoms continues to create opportunities on both sides of the causeway for many generations to come.
