Apps Review - June 2021

Here are some of the most interesting and useful apps Kristian Harrison came across this month!

This app allows pregnant women to record and share their baby’s heartbeat. It doesn’t require any additional accessories for your phone, simply follow the directions by placing your iPhone’s microphone on your stomach and watch as the audio feed comes to life. The app’s unique sound isolation algorithm allows it to hear a baby’s heartbeat from 27 weeks and on.

One Tomato follows the Pomodoro technique, a tried and true method that helps you define clear goals and get them done faster by setting aside blocks of time. Access the tag drawer on the right side of the screen with a tap and you’re able to choose from 14 pre-built tags or create your own. Then choose your focus duration - the most common being 25 minutes - and get to work. When time is up, you’ll receive a short break. Repeat the process over and over until your tasks and your day is complete. The app includes a white noise option, 3D Touch support, and stats that can be shared.

Windy combines natural wind recordings with stunning artwork to help you sleep, relax, study, or meditate. It utilises stereoscopic 3-D audio that’s optimised for headphones, so you can drift off into your own little world. The six natural wind recordings can be mixed with rain, river sounds, birds, and crickets. There’s also a whimsical story embedded within the app, allowing you to follow Windy on her journey to breath-taking locations.

Dreambase is a minimalist dream journal that's easy on the eyes in the early hours. It offers iCloud Sync, Tags & Filters, TouchID Lock, and Dream Statistics. Incredibly easy to use, just type in your dream, add some tags, mark it as lucid (or not), and start your day. Recording your dreams first thing in the morning quickly leads to improved dream recall. Detailed dream recall is a large part of becoming proficient at lucid dreaming.
