A Close Shave

The moustaches are back, bringing men’s health into focus. This Movember, American Mission Hospital encourages men to make time for a check-up and speak openly about concerns they may have been putting off.

A moustache can be a talking point. Each November, it also becomes a reminder to have conversations that men may find harder to start, whether about a physical change or their mental wellbeing.

Launched in Melbourne, Australia, in 2003, Movember brings together “moustache” and “November” in its name. The campaign has grown into an international movement addressing prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Its familiar facial hair gives supporters a visible way to raise awareness and get people talking.

At American Mission Hospital, Consultant Urologist Dr. Monish Cherian encourages men to overcome their reluctance to seek medical advice. Movember offers a timely opportunity to discuss personal risks with a doctor and ask questions that might otherwise go unanswered.

Age is part of that discussion. Prostate cancer predominantly affects men over 50, while testicular cancer is more common among younger men, particularly those aged 15–49.

Understanding these differences can help men recognise which concerns to raise with their doctor, rather than assuming that feeling well means there is nothing to discuss.

Dr. Cherian also encourages men to bring friends and colleagues into the conversation. A reminder to arrange a check-up, or a willingness to talk about an appointment, can help make seeking care feel more routine.

Mental wellbeing deserves that same openness at every age. Alongside its cancer awareness work, Movember encourages conversations about how men are coping, making room for concerns that may be less immediately visible.

For those seeking specialist advice at American Mission Hospital, Dr. Monish Cherian, Consultant Urologist, and Dr. Raghav Talwar, Urologist and Renal Transplant Consultant, are available for consultations. For kidney-related concerns, Dr. Shamik Shah and Dr. Ali Hasan AlAradi are Consultant Nephrologists.

Whether you grow a moustache or simply make an appointment, November offers a useful prompt to give your health a place in the diary.
