Mangoes are in season; here’s how to choose them!

There’s no dearth of mangoes at Lulu Hypermarket these days, especially with their Mango Mania festival currently going on. We’re talking about all sorts of varieties in different shapes, sizes, colours and levels of ripeness too! Mangoes can be enjoyed in innovative salads, pickled, juiced or just eaten on their own.
If you’re planning on picking exceptionally sweet mangoes to eat on their own or incorporate into a dessert, here’s what you need to do:

  1.  A ripe mango will always feel slightly soft when squeezed. When picking a mango give it a gentle squeeze as opposed to just focusing on its colour.
  2. Take a whiff of your mango at the stem. Mangoes that are ripe will generally smell quite sweet.
  3. Keep an eye out for dark spots. Even if a mango is exceptionally yellow and smells sweet, large dark spots which are far too soft are generally an indicator that it’s well on its way to being over ripe.

Remember, if you’ve stocked up your mangoes and can’t quite seem to finish them before they’re far too ripe, you can slice and store them in the freezer in sandwich bags.
