Royal Bahrain Hospital: Hear Your Heart Out

A specialist from this reputed hospital explains the importance of good habits in today’s stressful times and provides tips to maintain a healthy heart.

At a time when rapidly changing lifestyles are putting much pressure on maintaining good overall health, how exactly can you keep your heart healthy? Besides consuming a well-balanced diet and exercising regularly, Dr Waleed Sultan, cardiology specialist at the Royal Bahrain Hospital, suggests a few simple steps to keep your body healthy and happy.

Trans fats – A No-No!
Frozen pizzas, doughnuts, cakes and cookies contain high amounts of trans fats that are used to enhance taste and texture. Trans fats increase the risk of having a stroke or developing heart disease over time because they clog up the arteries by raising bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and lowering good cholesterol levels (HDL). By cutting out these foods from your diet, your blood flow will improve throughout your body.

Get Good Sleep
We lead busy lives, but it is essential to dedicate enough time to a consistent sleeping pattern. Consequences of lack of sleep include, but are not limited to, cardiovascular disease (regardless of age) and disruptions in our biological processes, leading to high blood pressure and inflammation. So make sure to get seven to eight hours of sleep every night.

Stand Up
Studies also show that sitting for long stretches of time is bad for your health. Many, whose jobs require hours of work at a desk, have a high risk of deep vein thrombosis (blood clot). Simple solutions such as routine walks around the office, parking farther away from your destination and daily exercise will definitely decrease the risk of getting cardiovascular diseases.

Follow these tips to care for your ticker, feel livelier and lead a wholesome lifestyle.
