Rugged Road Manners.

Kristian Harrison takes the Isuzu MU-X from Bahrain’s tarmac to rougher ground, finding a diesel SUV built around confidence, comfort and old-fashioned capability.

The steering is light enough around town, the seating position is commanding and visibility is exactly what you want in a large SUV. You sit high, with a clear view over the bonnet and enough awareness of the car’s corners to make daily driving less intimidating than its size might suggest. It does not shrink around you like a crossover, but nor does it feel cumbersome once you settle into its rhythm.

The MU-X feels most natural when driven smoothly. It is not a vehicle that encourages aggressive inputs or sharp darting through traffic. Instead, it rewards patience, measured acceleration and a more relaxed style of driving. For longer routes across Bahrain, that is no bad thing. It settles into a comfortable stride and gives the sense that distance is something to be absorbed rather than endured.

Inside, the cabin follows the same philosophy. It is practical, straightforward and made for use. The MU-X includes an electric parking brake with auto hold, dual-zone climate control and a nine-inch touchscreen audio system with USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity. These are useful features rather than decorative ones, and they add comfort without making the cabin feel unnecessarily complicated.

Beyond The Tarmac
The off-road portion of the drive is where the MU-X begins to separate itself from softer family SUVs. On uneven ground, the engine’s low-down torque becomes the star. Rather than needing to be worked hard, it allows the vehicle to ease forward with control. That matters off the road, where smoothness often counts for more than outright power.

Over loose surfaces, the MU-X felt composed and planted. There is a reassuring weight to the way it moves, and while you are always aware that this is a substantial vehicle, that size becomes part of its confidence. It does not skip nervously over rougher patches. It takes its time, grips, pulls and carries on.

This is where Isuzu’s heritage matters. The brand’s identity has long been tied to durability and diesel engineering, with more than 80 years of diesel engine experience, as well as more than 26 million diesel engines produced. The MU-X also uses common rail electronic fuel injection with an intercooler and turbocharger, along with a multi-information display showing instant and average fuel consumption.

What impressed me most off the road was not that the MU-X could tackle rough ground, but that it did so without drama. It did not feel fragile. It did not feel as if every bump was an insult to the cabin. There was a working toughness to it that gave the drive a sense of honesty.

Back on the road, that same toughness remains part of its character. The ride is firm enough to remind you that this is not pretending to be a luxury crossover, but comfortable enough for daily use. The cabin space is generous, the controls are clear and the general layout feels sensible. In a market full of SUVs chasing trends, the MU-X feels refreshingly direct.

Rugged family SUV for Bahrain highways and escapes

The design is bolder than before, with a striking new look with an impressive personality. In person, it suits the vehicle’s brief. The MU-X looks capable without becoming cartoonish and modern without losing the sturdy character that makes an Isuzu feel like an Isuzu.

The MU-X is not for someone who wants a flashy, tech-heavy SUV that feels more like a lounge than a machine. It is for drivers who need space, dependability and real-world ability. It is for families who want comfort during the week and freedom at the weekend. It is for Bahrain’s mix of smooth highways, urban journeys, desert tracks and rougher escapes.

After driving it both on the road and off it, the MU-X left a clear impression: this is an SUV that understands its purpose. It is comfortable enough for the everyday, strong enough for adventure and honest enough to make its capability feel earned.
