Golden Hour Grand Touring

Kristian Harrison drives a Madeira Gold Porsche Panamera through Bahrain, discovering a grand tourer whose colour, comfort and character turn every journey into theatre effortlessly.

Some cars photograph beautifully but lose a little magic in ordinary traffic. This Porsche Panamera does the opposite. Its Madeira Gold Metallic paint changes beneath Bahrain’s light, appearing bronze in shade, honey at sunset and liquid gold beneath the midday sun. It is elegant, dramatic and impossible to mistake for anything else.

The colour works because the Panamera’s shape is distinctive. It sits low and wide, with the flowing roofline of a coupé and the presence of a proper luxury saloon.

This particular car sharpens the look with 21-inch Panamera Exclusive Design wheels, painted black with highly polished surfaces, high-gloss black window trim and dark bronze sports tailpipes. The combination sounds extravagant, yet it looks cohesive.

Performance With Polish

Under the long bonnet is Porsche’s 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, producing 353PS and 500Nm. Power reaches the rear wheels through an eight-speed PDK transmission, while the fitted Sport Chrono Package cuts the 0–100kmph sprint to 5.1 seconds. Keep going and it is capable of 272kmph, although its talents are far more enjoyable at sensible Bahrain speeds.

What impresses most is the way it gathers pace. There is no unnecessary drama, only a smooth, determined surge accompanied by a cultured V6 soundtrack. The PDK changes gear before you have finished thinking about it, and selecting Sport mode makes the responses noticeably sharper without turning the car into something tiring or temperamental.

For such a substantial machine, the Panamera feels wonderfully accurate. The steering is beautifully judged, the front end responds keenly and the body remains composed through quicker bends. It can entertain when the road opens up, then settle immediately into a quiet cruise.

That dual personality makes it equally suited to an early drive along Bahrain’s open highways or a polished arrival in the heart of Manama.

Espresso Elegance

Inside, the Madeira Gold exterior gives way to a rich Espresso club-leather cabin.
It is a wonderfully grown-up colour combination, warm and luxurious without being predictable. The 14-way electric comfort seats offer memory settings and front ventilation, a particularly welcome detail during Bahrain’s hotter months, while Porsche crests on the headrests add a discreet bespoke touch.

Porsche Panamera luxury dashboard and passenger display

The panoramic roof brightens the cabin, while the low dashboard and rising centre console create a driving position that feels focused without becoming cramped. A separate passenger display gives whoever is riding alongside something to explore, and the BOSE Surround Sound System turns familiar playlists into a convincing concert. The technology is plentiful, but the cabin still feels like a car rather than an electronics showroom.

Life in Style

There are clever everyday touches too. Porsche Entry removes the need to search pockets for the key, Lane Change Assist takes some stress out of busy traffic and HD-Matrix LED headlights provide tremendous clarity after dark. Exclusive Design taillights complete the evening look, ensuring the Panamera remains every bit as striking when it disappears down the road.

The rear seats offer the atmosphere of a private lounge, yet the large tailgate means this is still a car that can handle luggage, shopping or a weekend away. That practicality matters because it encourages owners to enjoy the Panamera regularly rather than preserve it for special occasions.

Madeira Gold could easily have overwhelmed a lesser design. Here, it reveals the Panamera’s best qualities. It feels glamorous but sophisticated, fast but relaxed and luxurious without losing the precision expected of a Porsche. This particular specification transforms an already accomplished grand tourer into something genuinely memorable. In Bahrain’s sunshine, gold has rarely looked this good.
