In the heart of Bahrain’s bustling streets, Kristian Harrison had the privilege of experiencing the future of electric mobility with the revolutionary Kia EV9. First impressions matter, and the EV9 nails it with its futuristic vibes. As I approached the vehicle, the first thing I noticed is perhaps the car’s most revolutionary feature: cameras masquerading as wing mirrors. Genius! No longer do you have to roll down the windows and smear water, sand or other grime off if you want to see properly!
Admittedly, it takes a bit of getting used to and you have to look downwards more which takes your eyes further from the road ahead, but it soon felt perfectly normal. The digital rearview mirror (which you can flick back to the traditional mirror if you like) offers much more visibility.

It’s luxury with a side of practicality, and I’m here for it.
Oh, not only that, but if said parking space is a bit of a tight squeeze (we all know how some people like to park in this country) then things get even more cool with Remote Smart Parking Assist. Park in front of the space, get out the car and then reverse it backwards in a straight line with the key. It’s simply mind-blowing, and don’t worry about accidentally hitting the back of your garage wall, or even worse, any unaware children running around, as the motion sensors will ensure it stops on a dime.
The tech in this car was simply outstanding. The EV9’s infotainment system is like having a personal assistant on board. Need directions to the nearest shawarma restaurant? Just ask. Want to blast your favourite tunes? Pick from extensive radio, Bluetooth and USB options. Want to send a text without lifting a finger? The seamless smartphone integration has you sorted. If you still feel weirded out by the silence of an EV, there’s even Active Sound Design, for fake engine noises that are more spaceship than car, but is there for those who want it.
Now, onto the real purpose of a car: driving. The EV9 isn’t just smooth – it’s freshly-made hummus smooth. Electric power means instant torque, so you’ll be zipping through traffic with ease. 429BHP, 700Nm of torque, 0-100kmph in 5.3 seconds and a battery range of almost 500 miles on full charge… what more could you want?
There’s no compromise on safety either. The EV9 has your back (and your sides and your front) with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, parking collision avoidance assist and much more.
