Locusts could return to the Bahrain this week

The Agriculture and Marine Resources has warned that locusts could reach Bahrain again this week and has urged farmers to take necessary precautions.

The locusts had last been sighted in Bahrain on February 20th causing panic among residents. Videos circulating on social media platforms showed tens of thousands of the insects flying in swarms or covering trees.

The department within the Ministry of Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning referred to a statement issued by the locust center in Saudi Arabia stating that opposite air currents from the north and south this week are expected to, once again, carry swarms of locusts.

The locusts may reach the Eastern Province in Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries, including Bahrain, it added.

All farmers should be ready and inform the locust follow-up team in case locusts attack their crops. The necessary control operations should be taken only after taking safety precautions, it said.
