Leading With Awareness

From guest expectations to team wellbeing, Nuria Leal Aguirre, Assistant General Manager at Barceló Hotel and Residences Bahrain, offers a measured perspective on leadership rooted in care and cultural understanding.
Ramadan often reshapes both guest expectations and hotel operations. How does Barceló Bahrain adapt its rhythm during the holy month while maintaining a sense of warmth and hospitality for all guests?
Ramadan naturally changes the pace of daily life, and at Barceló Bahrain we adapt to that rhythm with care. We adjust timings and services to align with the holy month while staying true to what defines us as a brand: being close, warm and genuinely caring. The aim is to create a calm and respectful atmosphere where every guest feels comfortable, whether they are fasting or experiencing Ramadan for the first time.
From a leadership perspective, what changes most behind the scenes during Ramadan in terms of staffing, service flow and guest engagement?
Flexibility is the biggest shift. We adapt schedules around fasting hours, reorganise service flow for Iftar and Suhoor, and place greater emphasis on personal interaction. As leaders, being present and supportive is key to ensuring everything runs smoothly without adding pressure to the team.
How do you balance cultural sensitivity with the needs of international travellers experiencing Ramadan in Bahrain for the first time?
We guide guests rather than restrict them. Our team explains local customs in a friendly, simple way while offering alternatives so international travellers feel at ease. Many guests find Ramadan a meaningful opportunity to connect with local culture during their stay.
Iftar and Suhoor are increasingly experiential rather than purely traditional. What guiding principles shape Barceló Bahrain’s Ramadan dining concepts?
We start from tradition but avoid rigidity. Good food, a welcoming atmosphere and attentive service matter most. The spirit of Ramadan should be felt naturally through the experience as a whole.

How do you ensure Valentine’s experiences feel romantic while remaining culturally sensitive in Bahrain?
Romance is in the details. We keep experiences elegant and subtle, focusing on intimacy and personalisation. We also view Valentine’s Day as a broader celebration of love, ensuring all guests feel welcome.
In a market with strong competition, what defines a meaningful celebration for couples today beyond décor and dining?
Couples value quality time above all else. Creating moments where they can relax, connect and enjoy being together is what makes an experience truly meaningful.
How do you, as a leader, support staff wellbeing and morale during Ramadan while upholding service standards?
Empathy and communication are essential. By being flexible, understanding and close to the team, especially during busy periods, we create an environment where people feel supported and perform at their best.
Looking ahead, how do seasonal moments such as Ramadan and Valentine’s Day influence your long-term vision for guest experience at Barceló Bahrain?
These moments encourage us to evolve. They challenge us to be more creative and culturally aware, shaping experiences that feel authentic, emotional and closely connected to both the destination and our brand.
