Shaping Tomorrow’s Learners.

With a new upper school campus on the horizon and an ambitious programme of academic innovation, sport and the arts, the British School of Bahrain is preparing for its next era. Executive Head Liz Stanley speaks to Bahrain This Month’s Shruti Ramesh about technology, global citizenship, wellbeing and what it means to remain one of the Kingdom’s most respected centres of learning.

A Holistic Vision
Academic strength has long defined the British School of Bahrain, yet Ms. Stanley emphasises that the school’s direction today embraces a far broader sense of purpose. “Academics will always be at the heart of what we do, but we are just as proud of our holistic curriculum,” she explains. She is referring to the framework that shapes BSB’s long-term strategy, anchored in three pillars: academics, sport and the arts. This philosophy aims to shape not only academic progress, but the confidence and character with which students step into the world.

That balance has delivered strong outcomes. This year, half of all GCSE and A Level grades were A or A*, while 98 percent of students received offers from their first-choice universities. The school also celebrated multiple Pearson High Achiever Awards and Pearson Outstanding Learner Awards, including several students who earned the highest marks in the world, the Middle East and Bahrain.

Championing Creativity
Creative expression thrives at BSB. Weekly Live Lounge performances, full-scale productions across the year groups and an active instrumental programme have created an environment in which students are encouraged to explore artistic identity with confidence.

BSB musicians continue to excel in regional and international competitions, including Young Musicians of the Gulf, the Gulf Steinway Piano Competition and the COBIS Music Festival. In April, BSB will host the COBIS festival in Bahrain, welcoming schools from across the world. As Ms. Stanley remarks: “we have incredibly talented students and our team works hard to give them platforms to shine.”

High Performance Sport
Sport at BSB is entering a defining phase with the introduction of the High Performance Sports Programme. Every student enjoys broad and varied PE provision, while competitive athletes develop strengths through the BSB Bulldogs squads.

At the programme’s top tier, 25 students train within the High Performance cohort, accessing personalised conditioning, nutrition support, sports psychology and recovery plans designed to mirror professional sporting environments. Guest speakers have included England’s Strongest Woman, several world champion boxers and the adventurer who led Bahrain’s first Everest expedition. Ms. Stanley explains that the aim is to “prepare them for university scholarships or even professional careers.”

Transformative Technology
One of BSB’s most distinctive strengths is its adoption of advanced educational technology through the Inspired global group. Inspired AI has transformed learning in subjects like mathematics, where BSB students recently achieved the highest marks worldwide in both GCSE Maths and AS Maths. The platform personalises learning at pace, offering feedback that supports rapid progress.

The Inspired Metaverse brings lessons to life in equally compelling ways. Through VR and AR, students walk through the human heart, examine ecosystems or explore distant locations. Ms. Stanley notes that it “takes learning beyond the classroom walls without leaving the room,” encouraging curiosity and fostering deeper understanding.
The Inspired Global Study Platform, now rolling out in phases, is set to unify resources, assessment tools and instant feedback. A parent-facing version launches next term, offering families real-time insight into progress, strengths and areas for support.

Senior School state of the art Campus
A significant milestone in BSB’s evolution is the new campus dedicated to Years 10 to 13, scheduled to open in the 2026–27 academic year. Designed with MSCEB, one of the region’s leading architecture firms, the campus emphasises light, space, wellbeing and sustainability.

The campus offers state-of-the-art science labs, engineering and technology rooms, independent study spaces and a contemporary library. A professional auditorium, drama and art suites and dedicated rehearsal rooms will elevate the creative arts provision.

Sports facilities will be among the strongest in the region, with a full-size FIFA-grade football pitch, a 400m athletics track, an eight-lane swimming pool, martial arts rooms, dance studios and indoor courts. Younger year groups will also be able to access many of these spaces.

Conveniently located next to the current site, the new campus allows families to maintain a single drop-off point. Once senior students move, the existing campus will enter a phased refurbishment.

Broadening Pathways
While the core British curriculum remains consistent, new pathways continue to emerge. Mandarin was introduced this year following parent interest and is set to expand next year. The school is also reviewing GCSE, A Level and BTEC options to broaden subject choice and strengthen vocational and industry-linked pathways.

As part of the Inspired network, students have access to a global ecosystem. Exchanges, collaborations and specialised summer programmes give learners the chance to explore disciplines abroad, from fashion design in Milan to science and engineering academies across Europe.

Global Values and Wellbeing
With a student body representing more than 90 nationalities, global citizenship is woven into daily life. Cultural celebrations, international perspectives within the curriculum and shared community experiences nurture open-minded, confident learners.

The school’s 30th anniversary initiative with UNICEF reflects this ethos. The campaign aims to support 10,000 underprivileged children in Palestine, Senegal and India, mirroring the number of students who have graduated from BSB over the past three decades.

Wellbeing is supported through the Support 360 programme, which offers comprehensive pastoral care, counselling, safeguarding and learning support across all age groups. A structured pastoral curriculum prepares students for emotional and social challenges long before examinations begin.

A Connected Community
Parent engagement is one of BSB’s most valued strengths. Free daily classes including yoga, Pilates, Arabic, art and embroidery create a welcoming community hub, many led by parents themselves. Workshops on digital safety and curriculum expectations run throughout the year, and the school is a partner in the Smartphone-Free Childhood initiative with Royal Bahrain Hospital.

Large annual events, such as the Festive Night Market and Family Fair, draw thousands and reinforce the school’s community spirit.

Forging Ahead
For Ms. Stanley, the vision remains focused and steady. “We want to continue doing what we do, and do it better,” she says. Academic excellence will remain the foundation, supported by exceptional sport, performing arts, innovation and wellbeing. With the new campus taking shape and programmes expanding, BSB is preparing students not only for university, but for a world that is evolving faster than ever.
