Kristian Harrison enjoys a relaxing stay at Gulf Hotel Bahrain, a Marriott Bonvoy property. He discovers a landmark address with rich history, warm service, extensive dining, comfortable rooms and superb leisure facilities.
ew hotels in Bahrain carry the same sense of history as Gulf Hotel Bahrain. Opened in 1969, the property has long been part of the kingdom’s hospitality story, welcoming generations of residents, visitors, dignitaries, families and food lovers through its doors. It is one of those places that feels familiar even before check-in, partly because of its reputation and partly because so many people in Bahrain have a memory connected to it.
From the moment I arrived, the experience was smooth and welcoming. The staff were extremely friendly throughout, whether at reception, around the restaurants, by the pool or in the leisure areas, and that warmth made the stay feel personal.
A Bahrain Classic
The rooms are comfortable, well equipped and designed for proper rest. There is a calm, traditional hotel feel to the accommodation, with the space, softness and practicality needed for a staycation. After a busy week, the room offered exactly what I wanted, a quiet place to unwind, switch off and enjoy the comfort of being looked after.
The bed was particularly inviting, while the room had all the essentials for a relaxed stay, with enough space to settle in properly rather than simply drop off a bag and head back out. The property has the scale and range of a large hotel, but the room still gives you that private retreat feeling that is essential for a good staycation.

Dining Destination
Food and beverage has always been one of the hotel’s biggest strengths and reasons to visit. Gulf Hotel Bahrain has an extensive collection of 19 restaurants and lounges, covering a wide range of cuisines and atmospheres. Whether guests are looking for a casual bite, a relaxed drink, a family meal or a more refined dinner, there is a huge amount of choice without needing to leave the property.
For me, the highlight was Margarita Mexicana. The restaurant delivered exactly what I hoped for, high-quality, authentic Mexican food full of flavour, colour and freshness. The dishes felt generous and vibrant, with that comforting mix of spice, texture and warmth that makes Mexican cuisine so enjoyable when done properly. In a hotel known for its culinary variety, it still managed to make a strong individual impression.
Poolside Ease
The pool area is another major strength. Spacious, attractive and resort-like, it gives the hotel a genuine leisure feel in the middle of the city. It is the kind of pool area that makes you want to slow down, order something refreshing and spend a few hours doing very little except soaking up rays and relaxing.

The wider leisure offering is also impressive. The spa is extensive, giving guests plenty of opportunity to relax and recharge, while the facilities add depth to the overall experience. Whether you are planning a full treatment, looking to unwind before dinner or simply want to make wellness part of the stay, the hotel has the scale and variety to make it worthwhile.
What I enjoyed most about Gulf Hotel Bahrain was the feeling of being somewhere with history, personality and substance. It is a landmark hotel, but it does not rely on reputation alone. The comfortable rooms, excellent dining, impressive pool, extensive spa and genuinely friendly staff all come together to create a staycation that feels easy, enjoyable and distinctly Bahraini.
