A Sporting Synergy

by: BTM - Sat, 07 Nov 2026

From Formula 1 and professional cycling to international championships and emerging talent, sport has become an important connection between Italy and Bahrain. Through shared achievements, technical expertise and opportunities for athletes, the two countries continue to strengthen a relationship that extends well beyond competition.

Cycling Success
Professional cycling offers another example of cooperation between the two countries. Team Bahrain Victorious brings together Bahraini sporting ambition and Italian expertise, with riders including Damiano Caruso, Antonio Tiberi, Edoardo Zambanini, Alessandro Borgo and Daniel Skerl competing under Bahrain’s colours.

Tiberi’s achievements include winning the Maglia Bianca, awarded to the best young rider at the 2024 Giro d’Italia.

Italian manufacturers also contribute to the team’s performance. Bianchi supplies its racing bicycles, incorporating technologies such as Countervail vibration reduction, while Alé Cycling provides specialist clothing and equipment. Together, these partnerships place Italian engineering and design at the centre of Bahrain’s international cycling presence.

Beyond Borders
The sporting exchange also extends to athletes competing across a wide range of disciplines. At the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025, Bahrain was represented by snowshoe athletes Mahmoud Mohsen and Rawan Al Saad, who prepared for their winter competition by training on the Kingdom’s desert sand. Mohsen secured a bronze medal, marking a memorable achievement for Bahrain at an international event dedicated to athletes with intellectual disabilities.

In swimming, the Italian-born Bahraini Balzano brothers have also made their mark. Their performances in regional and international competitions have earned medals and established Bahraini national records, reflecting the opportunities created by sporting experiences spanning different cultures.

Sporting Diplomacy
Beyond the competition itself, the Embassy of Italy in Bahrain has maintained an active presence at sporting events.

Its participation in the last two editions of IRONMAN 70.3 Bahrain, through a dedicated exhibition booth, reflects an ongoing commitment to engaging with the Kingdom’s sporting community. The Embassy also plans to participate in the next edition, scheduled for December 11, 2026.

That enthusiasm extends to H.E. Andrea Catalano, the Italian Ambassador to Bahrain. Having discovered a passion for horse riding in the Kingdom, he has embraced equestrian sport with considerable determination, despite the occasional fall from the saddle. His experience offers a more personal illustration of the connections formed through sport.

Championship Stage
Bahrain has increasingly provided a stage for Italian athletes competing in major international championships.

At the 2024 Bahrain Para Badminton International, Italian competitors Rosa Efomo De Marco and Yuri Ferrigno delivered outstanding performances without dropping a set. The following year, Italy returned for the 2025 BWF Para Badminton World Championships at Isa Sports City, led by coach Enrico Galeani. The tournament marked the first time the championships had been held in the Middle East.

Fencing provided another opportunity for sporting exchange when Manama hosted the 2025 Veteran Fencing World Championships in November. Held at Isa Bin Rashid Hall, the competition welcomed athletes from 64 countries. Italy finished second overall behind the United States, collecting 25 medals and demonstrating its longstanding strength in the discipline.

Racing Connections
When Bahrain hosted the Middle East’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2004, Italian motorsport made history alongside the Kingdom. Ferrari secured a memorable one-two finish, with Michael Schumacher taking victory ahead of teammate Rubens Barrichello. It marked Schumacher’s third consecutive win of the season and reinforced Ferrari’s dominance in a championship year.

More than two decades later, that connection continues through Bahrain’s emerging motorsport talent. Young karting driver Tariq Sofi, known as ‘Turbo Tariq’, has joined Italy’s Lenovo Kalì Kart Team, training and competing in an environment renowned for developing future racing professionals. His experience demonstrates how international partnerships can create opportunities for young Bahraini athletes.

This collaboration also extends into motorsport manufacturing. Italian company Racing Force Group operates in Bahrain through brands including OMP, Bell Racing, Zeronoise and Racing Spirit. Bell Racing helmets, including those used in Formula 1, are engineered and manufactured in Bahrain using predominantly Italian machinery and raw materials. Certified 100% Made in Bahrain, they combine Italian technical expertise with Bahraini production.

Maritime Horizons
These sporting ties also present opportunities for tourism, particularly through the maritime traditions shared by Italy and Bahrain.

As an island nation with a longstanding connection to the sea, Bahrain has considerable potential to develop water sports and coastal tourism. Italy offers an example of how major nautical competitions can attract international attention, encourage investment in waterfront infrastructure and support sustainable tourism.

Naples is preparing to host the 38th America’s Cup in 2027, bringing one of sailing’s most prestigious competitions to the Italian coastline. The event will showcase the relationship between maritime heritage, advanced technology and international sporting competition.

Such developments offer a useful reference point for Bahrain as the Kingdom continues to invest in waterfront destinations and explore opportunities to host major nautical events.

From Ferrari’s historic victory in Sakhir to Bahraini athletes competing in Italy and Italian champions taking to the stage in Manama, this sporting bond has already produced memorable moments. With new talent emerging and further opportunities taking shape, there is plenty more to look forward to on both sides.
