Flourish With Watercolour

Bahrain-based Indian artist Madhu is a published author, award-winning influencer and watercolour educator. She tells Kristian Harrison about her creativity, inspirations and her passion project, Femvisionary.

With over 260,000 followers on Instagram and more than 11,000 students worldwide, Madhu’s mission is simple yet powerful: to make art joyful, accessible and emotionally resonant.

Painting With Purpose
Her relationship with art began as a form of self-expression and healing. “Art has been my way of finding calm and expressing emotions when words couldn’t,” she shares. Watercolour, with its fluid and unpredictable nature, quickly became her favourite medium. “It’s soft, expressive and has this magical unpredictability that keeps you fully present,” she says.

This connection inspired the creation of Femvisionary, a space to share that joy and encourage others to discover their own voice through watercolour.

Her teaching approach focuses less on technical perfection and more on emotional connection and freedom. “You don’t have to be ‘good at art’ to enjoy painting,” she insists. From immersive three-day masterclasses to casual workshops in cosy cafés around Bahrain, Madhu emphasises playfulness and progress. “We laugh, we paint, we make happy mistakes. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to try.”

“Start where you are – and don’t let perfectionism stop you. Every artist was a beginner once, and your first piece is just as important as your latest one. You’re not here to copy someone else, you’re here to discover your own creative rhythm. And remember: some of the most beautiful paintings are born from ‘mistakes.’ They make your work truly one-of-a-kind.”
Bahrain’s supportive atmosphere has greatly influenced her growth. “The Kingdom’s cultural richness and warmth have shaped both my art and the way I share it,” she says. “Hosting sessions in cafés like Unicorn Noms allows people from all walks of life to come together and connect over colour. It’s a beautiful, community-driven experience.”

A Voice for Creative Connection
Madhu’s impact extends far beyond Bahrain. For three consecutive years, she has served as a Brand Ambassador for World Watercolour Month, a global initiative by Doodlewash that supports the International Child Art Foundation. “It honestly means the world to me,” she says. “It’s a celebration that not only connects artists worldwide but also helps bring creative opportunities to children.”

This year, she launched The Art of Watercolours under the Femvisionary banner – an annual Bahrain-based event celebrating the medium. It brings artists, collectors and art lovers together to showcase talent and spark inspiration.

Her book Vibrant Watercolor Birds further extends her reach, offering step-by-step guidance for budding artists. “It’s designed for busy creatives,” she explains, “and brings the workshop experience to your home, anytime, anywhere.”

Madhu is equally passionate about uplifting others. “Be proud of where you come from. I strongly believe that your background is your superpower,” she says. “Passion becomes more meaningful when it uplifts a community. My masterclasses are warm, vibrant and truly beginner-friendly. You’ll be guided step-by-step to create your own signature watercolour artwork; something you’ll feel proud to frame or share. What’s even more exciting is that
each student’s final piece will be featured with upcoming artists at my Canvas of Nations Art event next year, giving them a chance to shine on a bigger stage!”
