TV Releases - October 2023

Halloween is just around the corner and spooks are on the menu. Whether you’re having a chilling movie night at home or keen on jump scares at the cinema, we’re sure you’ll love these recommendations.

Pain Hustlers
Dreaming of a better life for her and her young daughter, Liza Drake (Emily Blunt), a high-school dropout, lands a job with a failing pharmaceutical start-up in a yellowing strip mall in Central Florida. Liza’s charm, guts and drive catapult the company and her into the high life, where she soon finds herself at the centre of a criminal conspiracy with deadly consequences.

The Fall of The House of Usher
From the creator of The Haunting of Hill House, this new horror series is based off a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. As the story goes, the house of Usher is, quite literally, a house. But when the family within it becomes ill with confusing ailments, the narrator wonders if it might be the home itself that’s causing them.

We Have A Ghost
For a more light-hearted pick, opt for We Have A Ghost. The movie follows the Presley family as they move to a new town for a fresh start. Unfortunately, their new house is literally haunted. But not to worry, it’s just Ernest, a friendly ghost who lives in the family’s attic. Played by Stranger Things’ David Harbour, Ernest befriends Kevin, the youngest son (Jahi Di’Allo Winston), and they become overnight social media sensations. Unfortunately, that’s when things start to get a bit scary...

The Nun II
A follow-up to the enigmatic gothic horror about a strong evil that haunts and causes supernatural harm to everybody it comes into contact with. After the events of the first film, the said powerful evil now begins to spread in 1956 throughout a town in France as word gets out that a priest has been violently murdered. A finished contemplative in her novitiate, Sister Irene, begins to investigate the murder, only to find a demon behind it – the same evil that terrorised her in the original film as a nun – Valak, whom she once again soon comes to encounter.

Saw X
John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back. The most chilling instalment of the SAW franchise yet explores the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s most personal game. Set between the events of Saw I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, John returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through a series of ingenious and terrifying traps.

Cassandro
Gael García Bernal stars as the eponymous exótico wrestler in this upcoming biopic by director Roger Ross Williams. Bad Bunny, Roberta Colindrez, and Raúl Castillo round out the cast as Cassandro chronicles Saúl Armendáriz’s (a.k.a. Cassandro, played here by Bernal) rise in the wrestling world.

The Wheel of Time Season 2
Based on Robert Jordan’s novel series of the same name, The Wheel of Time revolves around Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), a member of the Aes Sedai organisation consisting of women who can control the One Power, as she and her Warder companion al’Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney) lead five young villagers from Two Rivers on a search for the Dragon Reborn.

Sitting in Bars with Cake
Inspired by the true events recounted in Audrey Shulman’s cookbook of the same name, Sitting in Bars with Cake is a moving romantic comedy-drama that follows 20-something best friends, extrovert Corinne (Odessa A’zion) and shy Jane (Yara Shahidi), as they navigate young adulthood in Los Angeles. In order to help Jane break out of her shell and meet new people while also flexing her immense home baking skills, Corinne convinces Jane to commit to a year of making cakes and bringing them to bars, dubbing the practice ‘cakebarring.’

Haunted Mansion
Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, Walt Disney Pictures’ Haunted Mansion is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters.

Mickey & Friends Trick Or Treats
In this new Halloween stop-motion special, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Daisy are trick-or-treating when Donald spies the spookiest mansion he’s ever seen and assumes it has the best treats. After he convinces his friends to risk a visit, the owner, Witch Hazel, casts a spell that turns them into their costumes.

Marvel’s Loki Season 2
Picking up immediately where Season 1 left off, viewers will find Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in a familiar, but strange, place. Loki is back at the TVA, he’s had a very difficult confrontation with Sylvie, and Mobius and Hunter B-15 don’t know who he is. Only time will tell what happens next.
